Three Arrested
In Theft of Ring
From Mrs. Krupp
Elizabeth, N. J. FBI
agents raided a motel here
yesterday and recovered a
$300,000 diamond ring stolen
from Mrs. Vera Krupp, for
mer wife of the German mu
nitions manufacturer, in a
robbery at her Nevada ranch
home last April. Three per
sons were arrested.
Those seized were James
George Reves, 31, a native of
Greenwood, Miss., his wife
Mary Jo., 31, formerly of
Hot Springs, Ark., and Ju
lius Berger, 43, Newark, N.J.,
paper bag salesman.
The ring, weighing 33.6
carats, was recovered in the
motel . where Reves and his
wife were seized. Berger was
arrested in Newark.
Reves and Berger were
held in $25,000 bail and
Reves' wife on $5,000 bail at
their arraignment here. They
were placed in custody of a
TJVS. Marshal pending grand
jury action.
Three gunmen stripped the
33.6 carat ring from M r s.
Krupp's finger on April 10 at
her ranch near Las Vegas
The retail value of the ring
was fixed at $300,000, and it
is insured for $200,000 to
$225,000, agents were told.
One robber gained entry to
Mrs. Krupp's luxurious home
by posing as a road contrac
tor who wanted to build a
black-top driveway to the
ranch house. Two others fol
lowed him into fhe room
when Mrs. Krupp, a brunette
divorcee, opened the door.
The three taped Mrs.
Krupp's eyes before they ran
sacked the house. They pulled
the ring from her finger and
tied her hands with an electri
cal cord.
Mrs. Krupp received, the
diamond ring from her ex
husband. The Krupps' have
been divorced three years.

The mines, located off, Ore
gon Caves highway, played an
important part in the early
history of the Illinois valley
area of southwestern Oregon,
Hussey noted.
"Old timers"' will . be on
hand to assist tourists in pan
ning gold, he said. Hussey
supplies pick and pan, and the
tourist may keep what gold
he finds.

Ellen F. - I don't have to
depend on boys to enjoy life.
Mrs. J.F. I am somewhat
concerned abou my daughter
Ellen, who is nearly 16, very
attractive and likable, but
dateless.
Ellen is one of the top stu
dents in her school and is ac
tive in many extracurricular
events. You'd think that
would throw her into contact
with boys, but sqmehow it
doesn t. When there is a dance
Ellen and her little crowd of
girl friends are left out.
Ellen doesn't seem to mind,
but I feel that she should be
getting some dating experi
ence now. She plans to go to
college and I know that many
girls are left out of dating ac
tivities at college. I feel she
should get into the swim now
if she doesn't want to be cast
aside when dates become
more important to her.
- Ellen F. - Nobody will ever
find me moaning over not
having a date. I have so many
things to do, so many things
that interest me that I don't
have to depend upon boys.
My friends are all like me.
We all have high marks and
lots of interests outside of dat
ing and boys. We all go to the
theater together or to other
places of interest. Sometimes
we get together for the even
ing at one of our homes and
just talk and laugh ourselves
sick.
Of course, 1 we are normal
girls and would welcome
dates if they came our way,
but we don't see any sense in
sitting around crying about it
if they don't. My friends tell
me that my mother is like all
the others - always pushing
them to get dates.
The Council: It is doubtful
whether there is much to be
gained by pressuring girls or
boys into dating earlier than
26 Measles Cases
Reported Last Week
A total of 59 cases of com
municable diseases, not count
ing 333 cases of influenza-like
illnesses, were reported' in
Jackson county last week, ac
cording to Dr. A. Erin Mer
kel, public health physician.
Twenty-six cases of measles
were reported, 16 of them in
Ashland. Other cases were re
ported in Medford, 9, and Cen
tral Point 1.
Other diseases reported in
cluded scarlet fever, Phoenix
1; strep throat, Medford 1;
trench mouth, Central Point
and Jacksonville 1 ' each;
mumps, Prospect 1; pneumo
nia, Medford 2, and Ashland,
Camp White, Prospect and
Tiller 1 each; German
measles, Medford 8, Ashland
and Central Point 4 each, and
Butte Falls 1; chicken pox,
Medford 4; and tuberculosis,
Ashland 1.

The inundation of the nat
ural basin known as Howard
Prairie has begun. The dam at
one end of the reservoir has
been completed and it is ex
pected that the reservoir will
be filled in two to three years.

Through a system of inter-

It certainly doesn't open the
road toward a happy relation

On the other hand, children
often need help in understand
ing themselves and the world
around them, and if parents
keep the communication ar
teries open they may achieve
the same results they seek
when they wrongfully use
pressure.
A girl like Ellen, for ex
ample, undoubtedly has some
desire to meet and form
friendships with boys. Happy
as she is with all her friends
and interests, she is curious
about boys and just a little bit
worried about why she has
been totally left out of the
social picture at her school.
Pride keeps Ellen from ac
knowledging some of these
things to herself, but if she
felt that her mother was deep
ly interested and sympathetic
without being at all demand
ing, she might open up more
and confess that she is a little
hurt and confused. Then Mrs.
J.F. can help her go to work
and find out how to build up
contacts with boys.
Undoubtedly Ellen and her
friends stick together so close
ly to build a barrier against
the very social contacts they
really want. They do not
realize that the boys are just
as fearful as they are and
need opportunities and en
couragement. Mothers can
certainly help the girls under
stand this.

Youth Acquitted in
Medford Court
Edwin Bryce Cripe, 18, of
2682 Crater Lake ave., was
acquitted in Medford munici
pal court Friday of a charge
of illegal possession of intoxi
cating beverages.
Cripe, according to Medford
police, was arrested last Sun
day following arrests on sim
ilar charges Saturday of two
companions, who pleaded
tfuiltv in court Monday morn
ing and received $35 fines
each.
The three were discovered
Saturday evening in a park
ed car on Washington st. be
tween Main and Eighth sts.,
police reported. Police said
CriDe ran away and was ap
prehended the next day.

sin. When the water levels in
the sources which feed the re
servoir drop to normalcy the
water will discontinue diver
sion to the reservoir. In this
way, prior water users of the
source areas will not be ad
versely affected, Youngblood
said.
In the main, the primary
use of the Howard Prairie re
servoir will be to supplement
the Emigrant lake reservoir
as it becomes depleted late in
the year. However, its value
to the area as a recreation
center is important, the BLM
official noted.
Both state and local conser
vationists recognize that the
area offers possibilities to
area residents for overnight
camping, fishing, boating, and
swimming. The management
of the recreational aspects of
the Howard Prairie project
are under the jurisdiction of
the Jackson county court,
through lease from the bureau
of land management.
The drop in the water level
of the Howard Prairie reser
voir as water is needed for
irrigation will not materially
affect the recreation and fish
ing uses of the lake, Young
blood said.
Of interest to the group
making the trip were evi
dences of past and present
examples of land manage
ment and the better uses to
which forest supplies are now
designated.
Little Consideration
In older areas where little
consideration was given to fu
ture use, there was left much
slash and logging debris
which not only detracted
greatly from the appearance
of the area, but hampered
considerably its regeneration
by well-intentioned efforts to
restore the land to produc
tivity.
Modern forest management
dictates which trees shall be
cut, and that the areas in
which cutting takes place
shall be performed with a
minimum of damage to the
trees which are not now of
harvestable age BLM officials
noted.
The area in which modern
forest practices of sustaining
the yield are exercised gave
evidence of long range plan
ning and intelligent consider
ation for their use by future
generations.
Two Appear in
Circuit Court
Darrell Donald Davis, 24,
of 1129 West Ninth st., Med
ford, received a three-year
suspended sentence Thursday
in circuit court for contrib
uting to the delinquency of a
minor.
He pleaded guilty to dis
trict attorney's information.
Sentence was suspended on
condition he spend six months
in the county jail., ;
Fred Lee Hickey, 23, gen
eral delivery, Medford, re
ceived a one-year suspended
sentence in circuit court for
grand larceny. H e pleaded
guilty to the charges. Sen
tence was suspended on con
dition he spend 30 days in the
county jail.

Truck and auto parts, Med

Yrekd Council Considers
Company's Proposal
Yreka-The Yreka city coun
cil last week took into con
sideration a proposal by the
California Oregon Power com
pany for relocating power
lines in the city's $578,000
Greenhorn project area.
C. W. (Pat) Patton, district
manager, said the company
would move the lines to ac
commodate work on the proj
ect without charge provided
the city pay $418 for the right-of-way
over which the re
located lines will pass, pay
any cost of temporarily re
locating power lines during
construction, and sign up for
service to pumping and other
facilities at the dam site.
The proposal resulted in
considerable discussion on the
$418, the amount which the
company claims it lost when
it gave the city a three-foot
strip to allow widening North
Oregon st. several years ago.
The $418 represents $18 ac
tual cost of the land and $400
legal fees.
Questions Cost
City Attorney J. P. Correia
questioned why it should cost
$418 when the company was,
in effect, trading one right-
of-way for another. He admit
ted he believed the burden"
rests on the city, since it is
a city project.
Patton said the company
does not want "to be put in
the position of continually
moving lines at the company's
expense and the city of
Yreka's discretion."
Yreka Mayor John Cum
mings said he felt the prob
lem of relocating a power line
which would over-hang a por
tion of the dam spillway and
the need to keep an exisiting
city water pump in operation
to supply water during con
struction is a technical prob
lem between the company and
dam engineers.
Patton said he did not be
lieve it was such a problem.
"We're willing to cooperate,
but only if we receive a guar
antee it won't interrupt serv
ice to our customers."
There are about 40,000 in

tion's homes, businesses and
factories with fuel oil for
heating.
