oppose the Grants Pass Mer
chants at Grants Pass on Sun
day, May 24.
The tussle will be at 2 p.m.
It will be the last practice
game prior to the opening of
the Rogue Valley league slate
for both clubs.
Players are asked to meet
art the bowling lanes at 11:30
a.m. Sunday.
The squad will have a work
cut on Saturday, May 23. This
1:30 pjn. drill will be at
Cheney field. Ball players of
the area interested in working
out with the club should be
at this drill. Information on
the team can be obtained by
telephoning Tony Evans at
radio station KMED in the
evenings.
Two other members of the
Rogue Valley loop will have
non-league fracas on Sun
day. Camp White will vie at

There's no time like the
present if the Yankees want
to prove they're still alive and
kickin'.
They'll have Bill Skowron,
their best hitter so far this
season, back in the lineup
when they open a four-game
series with the Baltimore
Orioles tonight. And they're
sending World Series hero Bob
Turley to the mound to try
to pitch them out of last place
But their work is cut out
for them because manager
Paul Richards is countering
with flutterball pitcher Hoyt
Wilhelm, .who pitched a no-
hitter against the Yankees last
season and beat them, 3-2, on
April 26. Wilhelm, whose
dancing knuckleballs have
been the despair of American
league hitters, has a perfect
5-0 record this year.
Depend on Indians ;
The Yankees need more
than a victory of their own to
move out of the cellar. The
Cleveland Indians must also
beat the Detoit Tigers who
knocked the Yankees into last
place with a 13-6 walloping on
Wednesday and have won 11
of 16 games since Jimmy
Dykes succeeded Bill Norman.
The Yankees were idle
along with most other teams
Thursday but the Pittsburgh
Pirates, Philadelphia Phillies
and Boston Red Sox all used
the day "to get well."
The Pirates, smarting under
criticism by Manager Danny
Murtaugh, beat the St. Louis
Cardinals 7-2, the Phillies
snapped an eight-game losing
streak with a 3-0 decision over
the Chica'go Cubs and the Red
Sox scored their second win
in nine games when they
downed the Athletics, 5-0.
Haddix Stops Cards
Harvey Haddix struck out
seven and yielded 10 hits as
he raised his record against
his ex-Cardinal teammates to
9-4 and his season-mark to 3-2.
The Pirates routed Lindy Mc-
Daniel with three runs in the
first inning and went on to
pile up 12 hits, including three
each by Bill Virdon and Don
Hoak. Gino Cimoli, Gene
Greene and Chick King had
