Group Seeking Tc
Boost Interest in
Science Education
Oklahoma City -CPD- An
Oklahoma organization i s
seeking to stimulate interest
in science education by foster
ing the same restless spirit
that drove the pioneers who
first settled the United States.
The Frontiers of Science
Foundation of Oklahoma, Inc.,
founded four years ago by a
group of businessmen and ed
ucators, is a guiding force in
Oklahoma's creation of a cli
mate favorable for the devel
opment of science and scien
tists. x
The . group recently re
ceived the praise of President
Eisenhower's Committee on
Scientists and Engineers for
"the most effective state-wide,
program" in the nation for
stimulating ( interest in sci
ence. Must Keep Spirit
"We must keep the restless
spirit that led to the settling
of this nation if we are to
keep our place in the world,"
explained Dean A. McGee,
Oklahoma City oilman and
foundation president.
'Science is the new fron
tier, and we must push back
that frontier if we are to re
main strong.
"To do this, however, we
must stimulate the public to
demand a better educational
system, particularly in the
fields of science and mathe
matics." The foundation is providing
this stimulation by inviting
scientists to speak to students
at all schools levels, providing
grants for individual and co
operative research, working
with educators to improve
schol curriculums, providing
scholarships for scientific
studies in colleges and uni
versities and sponsoring a a
series of science lectures for
school and civic groups
throughout the state.
"Before we established the
foudation," McGee said, "we
talked with scientists through
out the nation. They all were
concerned about the quality of .
education in science and
mathematics being offered in
the schools.
"They were especially in
terested in the education of
able and gifted persons who
will be needed for continued
scientific progress."
McGee said the gifted stu
dent must be given every op
portunity for development,
then have a place in which to
put his knowledge to full use.
"For this reason, we also
are striving for the creation
of a climate for the successful
operation of research labor
atories and science-based in
dustry in Oklahoma," he
said.
Work Just Beginning
Stanley Draper, foundation
vice president, said the foun
dation's work is Just begin
ning because the future of sci
ence is unlimited.
"The pioneer instinct in sci
ence has no boundaries such
as oceans or other countries,
which our pioneer forefathers
found when they opened the
land frontier, he said.
"We're just beginning to
find out things in science, so
we can't be satisfied with
what we have now. Only God
knows how far we can go."
Visitation Day Set
At Jacksonville
Jacksonville - Visitation
day for Jacksonville children
who will enroll in the first
grade next year will be held
Friday, May 22 between 1 and
2:30 p.m.
Purpose of the visitation is
to acquaint children with the
school plant, program and
teachers. After pre-schoolers
are assigned rooms, the par
ents will meet with the prin
cipal in the multipurpose
room to discuss the program
and policies.
