The odds-makers for one.
They installed Baltimore a
100-to-l shot at the start of
the season, but in a quick
switch the club is now offic
ially listed at 15-to-l.
Winners of their last six
games; the Orioles knocked
the Indians out of first place
Monday night and did the
same thing to the White Sox
Tuesday night. Cleveland
moved back into the lead with
a 5-2 victory over Washing

Richards, who could easily
wind up the manager of the
year the way the Orioles are
going, Is winning with a un
ique collection of castoffs and
modest-priced bonus players.

Joey Jay of the Braves held
the Giants to seven hits and
struck out the same number
in gaining his second victory.

be the day that staggers the
imagination-the day that the
proud, world champion New
York Yankees fall into last
place.
It was to happen If the
Yankees lost their day game
to the Detroit Tigers, current
tenants of the cellar, who
Tuesday night handed the
champs their fifth loss in their
last six games, 6-3, behind
lefty Don Mossi..
It's a situation never dream
ed of in the pre-season dope,
when the Yankees were fav
ored to return as American
league champs.
And, in his hour of desper
ate need, manager Casey Sten
gel finds himself calling on
the littlest Yankee of them
all-Bobby Shantz-to hold off
the, barbarians at the gate.
Stengel had planned to pitch
World Series hero Bob Turley
but the burly Turly needs
more rest.
Stengel it Calm
"I thought we did our best
hitting in a long time last
night," sighed Stengel. "But
when we got the hitting we
didn't get the pitching."
That's a sad, familiar story
to other ball clubs, of course,
but the Yankees seldom have
found themselves in those
straits during the past 10
yeps as Stengel . directed
them to nine pennants.
Now that the day of unex
pected doom may be at hand,
Stengel was taking it calmly,
just as years ago- he took de
feat after defeat in stride as
manager of hopeless Brook
lyn Dodgers and Boston

He. spoke wistfully in the

knowing that the only thing
that really could help would
be if the Yanks would start

Ghosts in Softball
Camp White team of the
Rogue Valley Baseball league
will switch to softball Thurs
day night.
They will be hosts to the
Iowa Colored Ghosts softball
team at 8 p jn. at the Veterans
Administration d o m i c i 1 i
ary stadium, Camp White.
Latest report says that the
clubs will play softball rath
er than baseball. And, the
Ghosts with their antics are
expected to turn out a hila
rious version of the sport.
It was reported today that
Vern Collins will be one of
the pitchers for the Camp
White nine. Collins is a vet
eran softballer and his fine
ability is well known in these
parts.
Strong Team
The Ghosts date from the
early 1930s when they formed
a nucleus out of Sioux City,
Iowa. Advance information
on the team states thai fans
can be sure that they will put
on "a good exhibition that
you will always remember."
Playing straight ball the
Ghosts are a strong team
which have defeated some of
the strongest clubs in this
country. But the Iowans just
don't play it straight all the
way. They add comedy
wrinkles that make them the
Harlem Globetrotters of soft
ball, entertaining crowds with
unorthodox ball- handling,
contortions and wisecracks.
Rip Collins, one of the fin
est hitters in the game, is
their manager.
