One of the most colorful parts of an annual festival
in Marostica, Italy, not far from Venice, is a chess
game in which the moves are made by live chessmen.
The costumed pageant re-enacts the centuries-old
story of Rinaldo d'Angarano and Vieri di Vallonara,
noblemen who had fallen in love with Lionora, daughter
of the governor of Marostica. Opposed to the use of
arms, the governor ordained that the issue be decided
by a game of chess. Legend has it that Rinaldo lost, but
later won the hand of Oldrada, the prince's sister, and
everyone was happy.
The moves of the animated chessmen are determined
in an actual game played through by the prince and
princess of Marostica. Important roles in the pageant
are played by well-known Italian stage and film stars.
The spectacle attracts visitors from all parts of Italy and
from many other countries.
