POTPOURRI
With all the excitement of
a week in New York as Ore
gon Mother of 1959 over and
done with,. Mrs. Harlan Bos
worth Is now in Buffalo to
visit her husband's father and
will return to Medford later
Mrs. B. wrote earlier to her
husband and friends to say
that she was heartily in ac
cord with the committee's se
lection of the Honorable Jen
nie Loitman Barron as Ameri
can Mother of 1959, and that
the choice had been univer
sally popular. Mrs. Barron,
the only woman ever to oc
cupy the bench as a superior
court judge in Massachusetts,
is credited with aiding hun
dreds of youngsters in turning
to useful and law-abiding
lives, and of having helped
many couples to solve their
marital difficulties. ,
, Mrs. Bosworth said Mrs
Barron, who has many college
and honorary degrees, had
said she prizes this new honor
above all others.
The Oregon mother and her
son, David, who was his
mother's official escort in
New York, wore Centennial
dress for part of the festivi
ties and one day presented
Mrs. Daniel Poling, head Of
the American Mothers' com
mittee, with an invitation to
become an Ambassador of
Good Will for the Centennial
Mrs. Poling, who now lives in
New York, is a former Ore-
gonian and her husbands
relatives live in Jackson
county. Mrs B. also wrote
that "the press took a fancy
. to me today and took several
pictures cf ms with Mrs
Barron."
After the Mother of the
Year festivities were over,
and Mrs. Bosworth and David
had "done" New York, the
two went to Washington D.C.,
for a time before leaving for
Buffalo. After her return to
Oregon, Mrs. Bosworth goes
to Portland for a United Na
tions meeting at which she
will be honored. Mrs. Bos
worth has long been active in
the UN and is on the state
board.
Although she could n6t be
here to enjoy the event, Mrs.
Bbsworth was also honored at
the anual May party given
Tuesday night at St. Mark's
church by members of St.
t Catherine's guild. The hon
' ored woman has been a mem
ber of the Episcopal church
for many years and teaches
Sunday school.
Mrs. L. G. Miles Of the
guild made two large por
traits of Mrs. Bosworth to
hang in the Guild hall and in
the Parish house where guests
were entertained, and they
were one of the main conver
sation pieces of the everting.
Medford's main street, with
its new tubs planted with lit
tle trees and flowers, has
taken on a new attractive
look this summer. It also has
a new name. Some of the
business men of the city, who
underwent the ministrations
of Mrs. 6. A. Eden during the
planning and r planting, now
refer to Main street as "The
Garden of Eden." O.S.
