B-52G Bomber
Sets Record for
Longest Flight
. Washington -CPU A B-52G
Jet bomber, newest H-bomb
and missile carrier of the
Strategic Air Command, has
made a record non-stop flight
of more than 9,000 miles
without refueling.
The spectacular perform
ance took place last Dec. 15,
but was disclosed only today.
It la the longest flight known
to have been made by a jet
bomber without refueling.
Potential Demonstrated
: Criss-crossing the United
States at 500 miles an hour
for 18 hours, the new giant of
the skies gave a striking dem
onstration of its potential as
an "airborne alert" aircraft.
The Strategic Air command
will put a portion of its bomb
er fleet on 'constant airborne
alert in the future to guaran
tee its retaliatory power
against destruction on the
ground by Russian missiles in
event of war.
Can Reach Russia
Armed with both H-bombs
and Hound-dog guided mis
siles the B-52Gs will patrol
in continuous readiness to
counter-attack should war
break out.
A true Intercontinental jet,
able to reach any Russian tar
get from North America, the
B-52G proved its range with
out aerial refueling to be
about 3,000 miles greater than
that of its predecessor B-52
Its top speed is more than
819 miles an hour-just below
the speed of sound at the 10-
mile altitude where it oper
ates. Far More Lethal
The Dec. 15 mission, flown
by a Boeing airplane comp
any crew with two Air Force
officers aboard, was notable
in another regard. It showed
the jet bomber now is the
equal in range of the old,
slow and recently retired
B-3S piston-engine bomber -and
far more lethal by rea
son of- speed and weapons
carried.
With a single in-flight re
fueling, aftef it had reached
cruise altitude, its range
could have been extended
about 2,500 miles for a total
of 11,500.
More Funds for
Oregon Projects
Sought by Group
Washington -GOT- A House
appropriations subcommittee
was asked Wednesday for
more money for Oregon pro
jects.
Included in the requests
were $100,000 for planning
-the Yaquina. bay project at
Newport, Ore., and more than
$2 million for Green Peter
dam on the santiam river. No
money for these projects was
recommended by the admin
istration.
Other Funds Sought
In addi'lon the subcommit
tee was asked to increase the
funds for other federal pro
jects in Oregon. .
Appearing before the sub
committee were Robert Flow-
eree and John Hill of Port
land; Tom Chamberlin, man
ager of the port of Newport;
Norman Price, Florence, Ore
secretary of the Port of Siu-
slaw commission, and Byron
Price of Eugene, chairman of
the Northwest Utilities con
ference.
Reps. Walter Norblad (R)
and Charles Porter CD) and
Sen. Richard L. Neuberger
(D) supported them in their
requests.
The Yaquina bay project
was authorized by Congress
last year but no money has
been provided. Neuberger
said a reappraisal of forests
assets in the area has in
creased the benefit-cost ratio
of the project and urged the
committee to go over the Pres
ident's head to make plan
ning money available.
Norman Price sought $545,
000 more for repair of a jet
ty in the Siuslaw river
mouth. He said the port of
Florence faces a threat of a
shutdown unless the south
jetty is repaired.

Up to 35 miles to the gallon room for five!
First off, the Taunus 17 M ii a precision-built

A truly "even keel" ride
You'll find German ingenuity and thoroughness

shock absorbers for a truly even keel ride. Or the
German-made engine, four cylinders, 67 h.p., it
delivers the highest torque in its class. Then there
are the little touches of luxury so rare in an econ

imedded in the arm rest. Foam-rubber seats adjust
for both leg and back comfort. Even the electric
clock, like everything about this car, is mode with
exacting German precision.
Everything says luxury car except the price!
You can choose from four different transmissions:
Standard U.S.-type 3-speed transmission. Or the
option of Germany's famous Saxomat "no pedal"
clutching. Or overdrive! There's even a 4-speed
transmission for sports car devotees.
Six different models: Combi-Station Wagon and
2- and 4-door Family Sedan, standard or deluxe.
All well worth seeing the very first chance you have.
