Why Not Scold The Men
For A Change?
I keep constantly getting
letters from disgusted women
who say, "Why are you al
ways talking
about nervous
women, com

men and sick

Others say,
"Why always
this talk about
wives who
are wrecking
Dr Arvare- their mar
riage or are acting like spoiled
children! or are not loving
enough, or are getting fat and
unattractive? Why don't you
turn on the men occasionally
and give them a scolding?"
Certainly there are lots of
paunchy husbands around
who are no answer to a maid
en's dream; they are anything
but loving, and from the point
of view of a wife, are a wash
out."
My secretary just handed
me a letter from a disgusted
woman in California who
says, "Why don't you describe
the type of husband who re
mains prettymuch a bachelor
after he is married? He con
tributes nothing to the mar-'
riage except some money.
What do you think of the man
who never shows his wife any
affection; who never remem
bers her birthday or an an
niversary; who never remem
bers to say a kind word about
the many things she does to
make life more comfortable
for him; who never says a
word when the dinner is par
ticularly tasty; who never
thinks of taking her out for
supper or even to a movie,
and whose onty concern when
he gets home is to eat his din
ner, look at television and go
sound asleep. When he takes
a ' vacation, he goes fishing
witho ne of his pals."
Emotional Hermit ,
Another woman writes,
"Why not describe the type
of husband who is an emotion
al hermit? The man who nev
er did have much affection or
sexual interest, and what little
he had ended by the time he

Emeritus Consultant In Medicine,

Emeritus Professor of Medicine.
Mayo Citato
was 40. He has never, been
the sorto f man who, by any
stretch of the words, you
could call a lover; he has the
emotions of an ameba; he is
incapableo f showing either
sympathy or understanding or
interest." As the wife says,
she is still youngish, attrac
tive, and full of pep, so she is
fed-up with being married to
"this Stone Age creature.
Nothing seems to interest him
- only food, sleep and the
monotonous routine of the
few things he does."
Another woman, with four
little children, writes that her
nerves have gone all-to-pieces
and her doctor is at his wit's
end, hunting for a new tran
quilizer that might perhaps
calm her down. He has given
her barbituarates but they
don't make her sleep. Why
has she gotten into this state?
She says she is frantic with
anxiety over money. Many of
her bills haven't been paidJ
for three months. She says
people lover her husband be
cause he is so good - natured,
but he has no sense about
money. On a clerk's salary, he
wil come home with a custom
made shot-gun or an expen
sive camera.
Conscience Bothers
He cannot understand why,
when he does this, she be
comes hysterical. She, natural
ly, wants the money for the
rent and food and some
clothes for the children. The
other day, after the power
company reminder her how
far in arrears they were, her
husband came home all happy
with a big new outboad mo
tor! Then it was that she
broke down, went all-to-pieces
and wept most of the night.
He thinks she is a fussy wom
an? ,
Yes, I gues my conscience
is bothering me for having
been talking so long about
nervous and 'crotchety wo
men. We men certainly often
deserve a bawling-out. What
is sad is that so few of us
men realize how easy it is to
make a wife happy with some
little remembrance of a
birthday or wedding anniver
sary, a few flowers, some
little gift, some little kindness
or thoughtfulness, a few words
of appreciation, an occasional
merry jaunt somewhere. Even
a dinner at "The Greasy
Spoon would be fun if hus
band were merry and com
municative. Even a night out
at the movies could be a gala
affair.
As many a wife has said to
me, "the trouble with my
husband is that there's no fun
in him; he is always so serious
and quiet; oftentimes at night
when he just sits in his chair,
saying nothing, I feel like
screaming, or like putting a
fire - cracker under him."
Man ya wife says, angrily,
Don't talk to me about my
being a better wife sexually;
you talk to him. To him, sex
is only a selfish need; I'm just
used, and I resent that deep
ly. That is why, for some time,
I have founght against it, even
though it looks now as if that
would lead me to a divorce."
