Nasser: Friend or Foe?
(This is the last of three dispatch
es on President Gamal Abdel Nas
ser of the United Arab Republic.)
By WILBUR G. LANDREY
UPI Correspondent
Cairo-fCPD - Gamal Abdel
Nasser is fighting the way he
fights best-on several fronts,
one of which faces West and
another East.
But his toughest battle may
well be at home in Egypt
against time and a rising pop
ulation. It will outlast his quarrels
with the Middle East Com
munists, the Russians, the
West and other Arab rulers.
More than 1,400 men, wom
en and children are packed
into each square mile of the
Nile Delta and the narrow
green strip along the river
that comprises inhabitable
Egypt. The total population is.
increasing by half a million
a year-about two per cent.
Income Low
Per capita income is esti
mated at $85 to ?100 a year
compared with more than
$2,150 a year in the United
States.
Some economists estimate
that Egyptian per capita in
come is about three-fifths of
what it was in 1913. The pop
ulation is out-running the
available land and food sup
ply.
Aside from the rich pashas,
who find it harder to import
their big cars, most Egyptians
are probably slightly better
off now than before Nasser's
revolution In 1952.
One million fellahin (peas
ants) have benefited from land
reform. There are plenty of
jobs for the skilled worker.
There are always buyers for
consumer goods.
But unemployment is wide
spread. The average number
of working days in the coun-

is going to be
o c c upied by
1 invading for-
; eigners who
1 have the ca-
j pacity of sup
porting ten
million of
Deios smith their individ
uals on one acre of land.
When they get up to that
density per acre, there's little
food left for anyone else, and
what's more, added Dr. Ed
ward O. Wilson, associate pro
fessor of entomology of Hai
vard University, these invad
ers could do no less well for
themselves in California. He
thought the rest of the coun
try was safe because of cli
mates distastetful to the in
vaders. Wilson was speaking of
ants, but what ants! These
South American fire-ants are
"exploding populations" in
Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi,
Alabama, Florida, Arkansas,
Tennessee, and North Caro
lina. And all this came from
a tiny and insignificant-looking
beachhead in Mobile, Ala.,
which was first noticed around
1919!
Eat Anything
These ants eat anything,
animal or vegetable, and
they're ferocious about it. Wil
son noted that they have con
sumed pigs, calves, and whole,
broods of chicks. Disturb a
nest, which. Wilson estimated
could contain up to 250,000
individuals, and ants swam
out in dense packs eager to
attack. Some Southern farm
workers refuse to work in
fields infested with nests.
Yet the sting is much less
fiery than that of the bee, Wil
son said. The danger is in
being stung by many ants all
at once. At least two children
have died of fire-ant venom
because they happened to be
especially sensitive to it. This
ability of the ants to assemble
in masses in a flash for de
fense or attack on their prey,
makes these pests different
from other ants.
Wilson said science had
much to learn about what
causes imported life to "ex
plode" in a new environment.
One obvious reason, or course,
is that it leaves behind its
natural enemies and competi
tors. In South America, this
variety of fire-ant isn't num
erous enough to be considered
much of a pest.
Multiplication Rale Increasing
Nor was it much of a .pest
in Mobile through the 20s and
into the 30s. Then something
Happened which caused it to
"explode." Wilson suggested
a change in evolution brought
about in the animal made it
ideally suited to thrive in the
South. At any rate, it has been
thriving ever since and Wil
son was positive the "explo
sion" in multiplication rate
was not only continuing but
was also "accelerating."
He believed the ants have
reached the borders of their
possible range in this coun
try because they need the
warmth of the South. But un
less a strict quarantine is es
tablished, they will be car-
riea Dy motor trattic from the
present western limit in Texas
to California, which has cli
mates it would like.
Wilson has been a scien
tific investigator of the ant
since 1949 and is considered
an authority. He summed up
entomology's present knowl
edge, which, he said, has a
number of holes, in an organ
of the American Museum of
Natural History.
tryside range from 150 to 220
a year. The first strong in
pression of the Westerner is
that Cairo's streets are filled
with aimless, idle men. Land
has been distributed but what
is needed is more land.
Middle East Workshop
Nasser is trying to outrun
the increasing population by
industrializing his country in
to the workshop of the Middle
East and by creating more
arable land.
Work is scheduled to begin
in earnest late this year on
the first stage of the Aswan
Dam which aims to increase
Egypt's cultivated land by
one-third, from six million to
eight million acres.
For that project, Russia
promised-when its relations
with Nasser were still good
the equivalent of 100 million
dollars. The Soviets have
promised 175 million dollars
to help Egypt's five-year in
dustrial plans.
There is yet another plan
to create a "new valley" par
allel to the Nile in the West
ern Desert by drilling for wa
ter and linking up a series of
oases.
The experience of the past
several years has proved that
it is easier to talk about am
bitious programs than to carry
them out. And Egypt can not
carry them out without out
side help.
Already she spends more
abroad than she earns. Al
though she has a money earn
er in the Suez Canal, she has
found no fabulous oil reserves
to finance her development.
For that she will continue
to need- help-from Russia,
from the West, or from both.
