Staggering In Every Bound
Patterson had the artillery,
but his eight-months of in
activity since he knocked out
Roy Harris last Aug. 18, made
him miss the target often -particularly
when he went all
out with Sunday punches in
trying to' put his man away.
They grazed-and they missed
- and on two misses, the cham
pion almost fell down.
Nevertheless, he gave dark
haired London a terrific beat
ing, particularly to the body.
And he had the iron man from
Blackpool, England, stagger
ing . at least once in nearly
every round.
The third session was Lon
don's best. He knocked the
champion back onto his heels
with a "sneaker right" to the
chin and fought well.
It was Floyd's 22nd straight
victory and his 34th in 35
fights. It was also his 16th
knockout in his 'last 17 bouts
and the 26th kayo in his
heavyweight career.
London suffered his fifth
defeat in 27 starts. .

sentenced to seven years in
federal prison for the Dec. 17
holdup last year of the Hills
dale branch of the Multno
mah bank. Clements was re
cently convicted at a trial.

Astoria (UPD Perry Lee
Andrews, Warrenton, was
found innocent Thursday of a
manslaughter charge arising
out of the death of a Forest
Grove high school students in
an elk hunting accident last
November. The jury deliber
ated only half an hour.

will get back into track and
field competition on Tuesday
in a dual meet at Rogue
River.
The engagement will serve
the Crusaders as a warm up
for their Class B district meet
and Rogue River as a tune up
for its A-2 sub-district and
Rogue league tussle the fol
lowing week end.-
Coach Bill McKibben of St.
Mary's said his squad may
get together on Sunday at the
Medford stadium for time
trials. He said he is "starting
to lose a few" of his cinder
men because of illnesses.
The Class B district meet
is planned for Saturday, May
8, with site still not certain.
The A-2 Rogue league meet
also will be May 9 with ac
tion at Southern Oregon col
lege where the full district
meet is set for May 16.

4-3 and 4-1 in a baseball dou
bleheader on the Crater High
school diamond.
Crater field was the fourth
try in an effort to find a field
that was playable in the wet
week end. Now any combina
tion of two Eastern Oregon
losses or two Southern Ore
gon wins will give the Red
Raiders their second consecu
tive Oregon Collegiate confer
ence baseball title. SOC is
8-1 in the OCC. -
SOC came from behind in
the first game to score three
runs in the fifth inning on
only one hit to gain enough
margin to win.
. Dave D'Olivo got credit for
victory in the opening game
and Don Vannice copped hon
ors in the second as each
Raider hurler struck out sev
en and walked only one.
Diets Shines
Jimmy Dietz was the hus
tle and bustle of the day as
he got two hits in two offi
cial trips to the plate. He
was hit by a pitched ball
twice, walked three times,
and scored four times. To top
off the performance the Raid
er second sacker stole home
with the tying run in the first
game.
In the three game series
Dietz had five hits in six
trips and PSC managed to get
him 'out only once. Dietz
raised his batting average
from .324 to a bulging .399.
Dietz scored first in
the
first game after being hit and
taking second on a wild pitch
before going to third on an
infield out. Larry Maurer then
doubled in the run.
In the fifth D'Olivo got on
by an error and Dietz walked
with Jim McAbee safe on a
sacrifice to load the bases.
Maurer grounded out but a
run scored and then' two
pitches later Dietz stole home.
Phil Sword followed with the
only hit of the inning for the
third and winning tally.
Score in Fourth
Portland State got its runs
on three singles and a two
run double in the fourth to
take their brief lead.
Dieti scored in the first
again ;n the second game af
ter ag'iin being hit. He went
to third on McAbee's single
and was forced home on two
consecutive walks.
SOC got two more in the
third on two walks, a sacri
fice fly after a wild pitch had
put runners on second and
third. Another walk and a
pickoff throw going into cen
ter field scored the final run
of the third inning.
The last run in the sixth
by the Red Raiders came
when Dietz singled and Mc
Abee tripled down the line.
