Library Applies for
Loan of Bookmobile
An application for tht loan
of a state-owned bookmobile
and a grant of funds for staff
ing, stocking, and operating
It during a two-year demon
stration period was submitted
to the trustees of the Oregon
State library this week by the
trustees of the Medford; Pub
lic library and Jackson Coun
ty library. "
The letter of application
reads in part, "Whereas the
total population of Jackson
county is now estimated to
be 72,000, of which only 40,
600 persons dwell within in
corporated towns served by
public libraries or county
library stations, we estimate
that a bookmobile would
bring library services within
convenient reach of 31,400 ad
ditional persons."
Tentative Outline
J Accompanying the letter is
a tentative outline of seven
tours to be made at two-week
intervals by the traveling li
brary with its 2,200 volumes.
' One of these would make
tops on the South Stage rd.,
at Griffin Creek, at intervals
throughout the Applegate area
and at Provolt. On its return
it would stop in the Oak
Grove and West Side school
areas.
A second tour would make
tops in the Camp White area
and go on to serve residents
of the Brownsboro and Lake
Creek areas. ,A tour is planned
to serve residents of the Fern
Valley, Wagner and Ander
son Creek areas, Lincoln and
Pinehurst.
Other Tours
Other tours would take the
bookmobile up Highway 62 to
Trail, Cascade Gorge and
Prospect, returning by way of
the Laurelhurst rd., through
the Table Rock and Sams Val
ley country to Meadows
school, Wimer and Willow
Springs.
The longest tour planned
Is the one that would include
stops at Blackwell nil, Table
Sock estates, Sardine Creek,
Bock Point, Evans ' Creek,
Foots Creek chapel, - Galls
Creek, Millers Gulch and
Kane Creek.
Space does not permit list
ing all stops planned on any
of the routes mentioned.
If the grant should be
awarded this service would be
maintained by state and fed
eral funds for a two-year pe
riod. At the end of that pe
riod Jackson county, through
'its county court, would have
the option of discontinuing
the project or of continuing
it with county support. In the
latter case the bookmobile
and all books purchased dur
ing the demonstration period
would become the permanent
property of the Jackson Coun
ty library. , ; .
Receive Such Projects
Many other Oregon coun-
Hea have already received
such projects, including
Clackamas, Tillamook, Linn
Benton, Malheur and Coos,
Deschutes, Klamath, Douglas,
Multnomah and other coun
ties have given bookmobile

A previous application made
by the Jackson County library
was rejected because it lack
ed supplementary indications
of interest from individuals
to be served by the project.
The present application is ac
companied by a number of
letters from residents of rural
areas desiring a bookmobile
demonstration for Jackson
county. .
Additional letters might be
useful in obtaining the award
for Jackson county, Miss
Helen Webster, library direc
tor, suggests, since the state
library is interested in know
ing how great the interest is
among the readers who would
benefit from the traveling li
brary service. She will be glad
to forward any letters received.
