Shady Cove
Celebrates
Centennial
A crowd estimated at 1,500
persons viewed the parade and
other Centennial activities in
Shady Cove yesterday as the
weather alternated prankish
ly between sunshine and show
ers.
The celebration was the
biggest event of its kind to
take place in the area, with
parade floats being entered by
more than 30 organizations,
businesses and individuals.
The event was sponsored by
the Shady Cove VFW Auxil
iary and included a Centen
nial dinner and dance Satur
day evening.
Other activities were a flow
er show sponsored by the
Shady Cove Garden club, a
Home Economics club display
and riding exhibitions by the
Eagle Point Desert Pegasers
and the Medford Trail Riders.
Food booths were provided by
Shady Cove Grange and Job's
Daughters.
., Sweepstakes winner in the
parade was a float entered by
the Shady Cove 4-H club,
while first place in the adult
division was won by Shady
Cove Grange, and first place
in the children's division went
to the seventh grade at Shady
Cove school. Second place
sweepstakes winner was the
Prospect Community club
jamboree float. -
One of the highlights of the
day was the attempted mock
kidnaping of an Indian prin
cess (Suzi Chubb, Shady Cove)
by the renegade Black Dog
bandit gang, , who organized
early this year to participate
in various Centennial affairs
in the valley.
The celebration was consid
ered a success in every, way,
with a large turnout for the
evening dinner and dance at
the VFW hall, according to

Dr. West Discusses
Budget's Cuts, Hikes
(Continued from Page 1)
Dr. West said the decrease
was accomplished by reducing
items and services budgeted
for activities . and bond re
serve funds. No reductions in
the academic program werei
made, he .stressed.
Several items in the pro
posed budget have been in
creased, primarily because of
the increased number of stu
dents at all grade levels, high
er costs of equipment, teach
ing supplies and more recent
ly added funds to purchase
several capital outlay items,
the use of which would be
spread over future years..
Dr. West pointed out that
two new 79-passenger busses,
text books and furniture are
included in this year's budg
et as a result of the recent
consolidation of Jacksonville,
Griffin Creek, Lone Pine,
Howard and Ruch districts
with Medford.
He pointed out, however,
that many budget, items were
reduced because of consolida
tion. However,, necessary ma
jor increases in other areas
offset the reductions.
The proposed budget is de
termined on the basis of ex
isting state and county finan
cial support formulas. If the
legislature should increase
state funds to maintain 38
per cent state aid for school
operation, local property will
be relieved of several mills
levy, Dr. West noted,
: The estimated millage, bas
ed on budget figures as of
May 1, with an assessed valu
ation of $45 million, would be
59.8 during the 1959-60 year,
compared to 46.8 for the pres
ent year based on the same
figures, Dr. West said.
The increase , is 13 mills,
or 27.7 per cent, he noted.

He .pointed out, however,
that should the valuation in
crease, or should the state in
crease its aid for school oper
ation, the millage would be
reduced.
The proposed budget does
not include funds for future
classroom needs.
Frank Bash, chairman of
the school board, said the
board has authorized school
administrators to study class
room and building needs in
the district for both immed
iate and long-range purposes.
The school board has sched
uled a series of meetings, with
board members of former dis
tricts at which time the pro
posed 1959-60 budget will be
discussed and explained. Also
at the meetings, the educa
tional and building needs of
each of the consolidating dis
tricts will be determined.
