Tillamook Cheese Factory Has Strike
Tillamook, Ore. (UPD - A
wage dispute involving some
18 employees of the fluid milk
department resulted in a strike
against the Tillamook cheese
factory Thursday.
About 200 men were re
ported off work. Farmers who
brought milk to the plant
stayed and processed it. Other
departments of the factory
were closed.

Young Children in Hospitals
I recently read a book on
children in hospitals publish
ed by Dr. James Robertson of
England (Ba-
ym I sic Books) in
which the
doctor does a
splendid job
of poin ting
out the many
psychic prob
lem s of the
child who has
to go to a
Dr. Alvares
hospital of
ten with only a faint idea of
why he is going, and why he
is being separated from his
parents. As Dr. Robertson
says, children ought to be kept
out of hospitals as much as
possible; but if they have to
go, then certain things ought
to be done to make matters
easier for them. First, if the
child is old enough to under
stand, the parents should be
frank and honest, and should
tell him what is going to hap
pen and why. If he is going to
have to suffer pain, they
should say so; but there should
be a strong note of hope that
he will get better.
As all directors of hospitals
should know, one of the most
distressing things about ad
mitting a child is that the
mother is sent home and the
child is sent up to a floor
where he knows no one. It is
immensely easier on the child,
the mother and the nurses if
the mother is allowed to go
up with the child and to help
the nurse put him to bed. It
would be better yet if the
mother were to be allowed to
stay with the child, and this
is what Dr. Robertson advises.
As he says, many head nurses
will have a fit about this, and
will prophesy that the mother
will interfere with the work
on the floor, but Robertson
says that the idea of leaving
the mother with the child has
been tried out in England, and
it has worked. The mother has
not gotten in the way of the
nurses, and she has not inter
fered with the work on the
floor. Because of the mothers'
having been with her child,
he or she has been much eas
ier to handle. The next best
thing to this is allowing a
mother to come and see the
child whenever she wants to.
Mother Should Go
One of the cruelest things
we do in America is to send a
child up to the operating
room all by himself. The
mother should go with the
child at least up to the operat
ing room floor, where, per
haps in a special room, the

room. As I have' said before,
it is time that hospital author
ities began to think of these
things. They ought to realize
that when parents and chil
dren are left with very dis
tressing memories of what
happened in the hospital, this
does not make for good public
relations. As I said recently,
and shall keep saying, a few
fine, kindly women working
as hostesses in a hospital
could quickly more than earn
their salaries.
