Youths Confess
To Taking Body
. Vancouver, Wash. - (DPD -Police
said today two high
school youths admitted taking
a long-interred body from a
temporary crypt at a mauso
leum in east Vancouver and
putting it in the Columbia
river.
The youths said they took
the body on an impulse and
tried to retrieve it but failed,
police reported. The body
sank and is not expected to
be recovered,' officers added.
The body was one of three
unclaimed bodies in the tem
porary crypt.
Police said the youths were
released to go home but were
scheduled to appear in Juve
nile Court.
About 20,000 kilowatt hours
of electricity are needed in the
production of two short tons
of aluminum.

vides for no increase in Duffs
own salary. -
"In developing this budget,"
Duff stated in his letter, "it
has been necessary to contain
most departments at their
present level and to defer for
future consideration many
necessary expansions of de
partments. "It was also necessary to
postpone many worthwhile
projects which would render
more complete and efficient
service. This curtailment has
been effected with a minimum
dilution of the program serv
ices of the departments."
Continuing Growth
Duff noted the city's con
tinuing population growth,
which, he said, increases
"service demands that tax the
facilities of all departments.
"The July 1, 1958 census
estimates indicated a popula
tion of 25,274 within the city.
Undoubtedly the 26,000 popu
lation mark has been passed
since that time."
Duff said the preliminary
budget reflects "some greater
emphasis on parks and recrea
tion this year." Specifically, it
provides salaries for the parks
and recreation director, a part-
time clerk, and recreation
leaders.
In the capital improvement
category, it includes the $75,
000 from the Jackson County
Housing authority for con
struction of the proposed West
Jackson st. . swimming pool,
and $2,300 for development of
a park area at that location.

Boyd explained to other
budget, committee members
that their responsibility is to
run through the 78-page docu
ment and mark any Item of a
questionaDie nature tor dis
cussion. "We try not to get
picayunish," he said. 1 Our job
is to establish a policy."
The committee agreed to
hold their first work session
next Friday evening, Tbey ex
pect to meet at least once a
week during the coming
month.
Committee members include
tha eight members of the city
council plus eight citizens.
These, besides Boyd and Mrs.
Houghton, are Carl Dawson,
Galen Knox, Tod Tibbutt,
Aubrey Loper, Tony Manno

for Fred Boaz Mintle, 67, who
died in Portland Wednesday,

be in Mt. View cemetery.
Mr. Mintle was born in
Glenwood, Iowa, :-Nov. 21,
1891. He moved to Ashland in
1920, and was employed by
the Southern Pacific company
berween January, 1926, and
November, 1956, when he re
tired. He served as a private
in the Army during World
War I, serving two years over
seas. He is survived by a daugh
ter, Mrs. Ida Smith, San Fran
cisco;, a son, Fred R. Mintle,
Idaho Falls, Idaho; a brother,
Arthur Mintle, Ashland; and
a sister, Mrs. Ben Pederson,
Ashland.

Ashland - Mrs. Clarice
Avilla Garrett, 59, died at her
home, 628. North- Main st.,
Ashland, yesterday. She had
been in failing health for five
years.
: She was born Oct. 14, 1899,
in Vale, Ore.- Mrs. Garrett
was a member of the ladies
auxiliary of Eagles Aerie 2093,
Medford,
She was married to Rodney
Garrett, June 11, 1916, in
Payette, Idaho, and moved to
Ashland from North Bend in
May, 1925.
Mrs. Garrett is survived by
her husband, Rodney; three
daughters, Mrs. Don Young,
Medford, Mrs. Ed Scholer,
Klamath Falls, and Mrs.
Clema Mayfield, - Ashland;
two sons, Clyde R. Garrett and
Claud T. Garrett,, both of Ash
land; her mother, Mrs. E. M.
Fuller, Cambridge, Idaho; ; a
sister, Mrs. Alvin Gibbs,
Council, Idaho; and 12 grand
children. .
Funeral , services will be
held Monday, May 4, at 1 p.m.
at Litwiller's Mt. View chapel

ing issues brought the aver
ages up a trifle but the best
advances centered on a few
issues, notably the cameras,
some of the electronics, some
of the drugs, tires, and spe
cialties. American Telephone show
ed a loss of nearly 2 points
at its low. Steels balanced off
small gains and losses. Tobac
cos fell 2 points or more on
publicity given the Arthur
Godfrey lung-cancer operation
and the addition of more taxes
on cigarettes in New York.
