Arthur Godfrey
Found To Have
Cancer in Lung
New York - IUPD - Surgeons
found a cancer in Arthur God
frey's left lung today and
began to remove the section
of the lung affected by it.
Two hours after the TV
entertainer underwent an ex
ploratory operation at Columbia-Presbyterian
Medical Cen
ter one of his surgeons an
nounced: "The lesion in Mr. Godfrey's
lft lung has been identified
i9 feeing a malignant tumor.
Wis condition is excellent."
Te surgeons said that God
frey probably would be on
the. operating table until
ground noon.
The announcement indicat
ed that the section of his lung
S not endangered by the malig
nancy would not be touched.
There was no indication
from the announcement that
Godfrey would be an invalid
as a result of the operation
the thing he said he feared
the most. But a long convales
cence can be expected as in
most lung operations.
Godfrey was placed under
mild sedation Wednesday and
was reported to have slept
soundly through the night.
Godfrey, 55, first disclosed
two weeks ago that an exam
ination for a pain in his chest
had shown he had a tumor.
He aajced his radio and tele
vision audiences to cross their
fingers for him in the hope
the growth would prove non-malignant.
An aide of Godfrey told a
UPI reporter after the news
as announced today that he
rxpected a great change in the
aatertainer's career. The aide
said he expected Godfrey to
$pnd more time on his farm
and also, after he is able to
5?et around again, to do more
snows from foreign countries.
The aide indicated he ex
pected Godfrey to attempt liv
ing as full a life as possible.
The import of what the aide
said, presumably drawn from
conversations with Godfrey,
was that the entertainer would
adopt even more of an "enjoy
life while I'm here" attitude.
