Eell was knocked off the fifth
floor of a new office build
ing under construction here
Wednesday and returned to
work on the 19th floor in less
than 30 minutes.
Bell, 34, was installing re
frigeration pipes at the new
Kaiser Center office building
when he was struck by a
swinging boom. As he plung
ed over the edge, he grabbed
a rope and slid safely to the
ground.
His heavy gloves prevented
rope burns-so Bell went rigtit
back to work.

Ringing In The Ears
Many times a week people
ask me what they can do to
cure ringing in their ears,
and I am sor
ry to say that
usually there
seems to be
no good treat
m e n t. The
best thing is
to go to a
good ear spe
cialist to see
if he can find
any sign of
disease in the ear, and es
pecially any disease which he
could help by treatment. In
many cases the ear man finds
disease that he cannot cure:
in other cases, usually of old
people, he cannot find any
thing wrong in the ears, and
then the chances are that the
person has suffered a little
injury in his brain what I
call a "little stroke'-dira to
the plugging-up of a little ar
tery. The doctor can be sure of
this when he hears that the
noises followed . a bad dizzy
spell, perhaps with some
wooziness. Perhaps, after this,
the patient was so changed
mentally that he could no
longer do much work at the
shop or the office. Perhaps at
home' he became irritable and
grouchy and hard to get along
with, and perhaps quite a bit
of his memory went. In such
cases ' there is usually little
that a doctor can do - he can
not remake the little bit of
brain that was destroyed.
Fortunately, in many cases
the effects of the little stroke
wear off in a' few months.
Bad Nervous Inheritance
Whenever I talk to people
about the ' importance of a
poor nervous inheritan.ee in
producing nervous troubles of
various kinds, someone in the
group is likely to say to me,
angrily, "You mean that be
cause my grandmother was
insane, I have to be insane?"
No, No; most certainly, not;
I didn't mean any such thing.
I did not say that, and I don't
intend to say that. I remember
a number of fine men and
women who, in spite of the
fact that they were born with
a terrible mental heredity on
both sides of the family, still
managed to live out their
lives as sane and well-adjusted
persons.
I have done much thinking
about this problem since
Christmas time when, among
the scores of letters I got from
old patients and friends, I re
ceived one from a woman
who must now be in her
middle sixties. I saw her first
when she was a lovely girl
about 18, disturbed mentally,
and seriously considering sui
cide. She was then a shy tense
person who, I knew, would
probably be too schizoid all
her life ever to marry. Her
father, although a fine, well
educated man who had done
much for his city, was so
poorly adjusted that he had
taken his own life.
Kept in Touch
Through the years I have
kept in touch with my old
patient and today I am proud
of what she has done. Brave
ly, she has fought off her in
herited tendency to mental
disease, and has kept doing a
magnificent job of running a
good - sized and important
business. She has never mar
ried. A few years ago, when
I had a chat with her, I found
her a fine, sensible woman. I
imagine her life has not al
ways been easy or happy. I
feel sure it has been a long
hard fight in which she has
hung onto her sanity.

Many may ask me, "But
how does one hang onto his
sanity?" And my answer, is,
"By living sanely." That is a
good way of doing it. A man
who comes of insane stock
should not be living erratical
ly with a bunch of impracti
cal persons, drinking a lot,
staying up till 2 or 3 in the
morning, and sleeping till
noon the next day. The man
would do much better to go
to bed at 10 and get up at 7.
He would do well to have a
job and work at it every day.
He should try hard to be
social, and to keep some inter
est in other people. It is not
sane to be self - centered. A
man should try to hang onto
a number of friendships. He
should try to keep feeling fit
all the time. If . he gets very
tired, he should take a rest.
He should fight worry; he
should try to make decisions
quickly; and he should try to
work without getting very
tense over it.

Diseases Of The Liver .
Scores of people write,
wanting to know what to do
for cirrhosis of the liver or
an enlarged liver, or a hepa
titis (inflammation of the
liver, perhaps with jaundice.)
I always have to say, "You'll
have to depend on the advice
of your physician who has
examined you." Ins many
cases there is no logical treat
ment. Hepatitis is due to a
virus of some kind. One virus
produces only a mild and
transitory jaundice, while
another virus can produce a
more severe and lasting in
jury to the liver. A cirrhosis
may be the end-result of a
hepatitis, or it may be the
end-result of years of hard
drinking.
After reading many papers
written by experts in the
study of this disease, my im
pression is that there isn't
much in the way of treatment.
In the Army, many of the
medical officers decided that
the best diet was a normal
one, and thta it didn't pay to
keep the men in bed; they did
better when up and about.
Obviously, a man who has an
alcoholic cirrhosis had better
leave alcohol alone for the
rest of his days.
