Emeritus Professor of Medicine.
Mayo Clint ,
anything. A plus 85 per cent
wouid mean much. But how do
I know whether the test was
made by a trustworthy per
son, with a trustworthy ma
chine, and a trustworthy
method?
How do I know if the test
was to be repeated four times,
and especially in four differ
ent laboratories, they would
all come out about the same?
I have seen cases in which
four such tests came out all
different. Most important of
all, How do I know if the per
son who wrote me is at all
ill, or showing any signs of
having a high metabolic rate?
Perhaps, if I were to see the
man, and see that he is per
fectly healthy, with a normal
pulse and a cool skin, I would
say, "Forget the whole thing
- you aren't sick."
Mistakes in Diagnosis
For years I have been trav
eling around the country
from one medical association
meeting to another begging
my fellow doctors not to try
to practice what I call brain
less or push-button or auto
mation medicine. Because
most of us human beings are
rather lazy, when we are
given a diagnosis by a labora
tory girl, we are inclined to
accept it as Gospel truth, and
then not to spend any more
time or energy thinking about
that patient. As a result of
this, we doctors sometimes
make big mistakes in diag
nosis. What is sad is that often
one question would show us
how mistaken we are. Half a
hundred times, when an as
sistant has said to me, "This
patient has a duodenal ulcer"
because the x - ray films
showed what looked like a
puckered duodenum I have
said to the patient, perhaps a
man of 50, "When did you
have hunger pain which came
when your stomach was emp
ty and which went away, the
minute you ate?" And the
man turned to his wife and
said, "Let's see, Mother; that
was 30 years ago, wasn't it,
when we were on our honey
moon." Evidently, then, what
the man had was not a duo
denal ulcer at all, but the scar
of a very old ulcer which had
healed many years before.
Potential Diabetie
I'll never forget a young
woman who came to me in
an awful dither because a
famous physician had told her
she was a potential diabetic.
When I found that, with sev
eral tests, she always had a
normal sugar, I tried to find
out what had caused my
friend to diagnose diabetes.
On telephoning him, I
found he had passed it on one
blood sugar reading of 171
mg. I said, "Evidentally a mis
take has been made some
where; will you get your
laboratory woman to look up
the original report of her test
and call me back?" In a few
minutes he. called, very apolo
getic, to say that his secretary
in charge of records often re
versed figures, and had
changed the original 117 into
171!
What I keep preaching .to
my doctor friends is, always
have a puzzling or ont-of-line
test repeated; but today most
of us prefer to worship one
report - like gospel truth.

Partridge Resigns
Medford YMCA Job
The YMCA personnel com
mittee has announced the
resignation of W. Herb Part
ridge as youth program direc
tor for the Medford YMCA.
Partridge has held the posi
tion since June, 1957.
He and his wife, Beverly,
will continue to live in Med
ford where he will be em
ployed by a local business in
the advertising field.
Partridge has made several
contributions to work with
youth in Medford, reorganiz
ing the Hi-Y club in 1958 and
introducing a father and son
program called YMCA Indian
Guides in 1959. He has taken
an active part in community
affairs, working in Kiwanis
projects and on publicity com
mittee for the UMC.
In the field of camping,
Partridge organized a YMCA
day camp for younger boys on
the Applegate and was direc
tor of the Diamond Lake
YMCA camp. Both camps will
operate this summer.
The YMCA personnel com
mittee is considering several
applicants to replace Partridge.
