Over Tigers With 3-Run Homer

Billy Martin has collected
five World Series checks al
ready and now is working on
hi sixth 'one with Cleveland
just so he can wave it in front
of Casey Stengel this fall.
Impish Billy knows Stengel
is a banker but it's doubtful
he would ask Casey to cash
it. The .two haven't exactly
been buddy-buddy since the
Yankees let Martin go in
1957.
Any time Martin can
"show" Stengel, his day is
complete. Like he did Thurs
day when he smashed a three
run homer in leading the In
dians to a 10-4 victory over
the Tigers.
So what if he only raised
his average from .132 to-.171?
The important thing is his
blow capped a decisive five
run rally and increased Cleve-'
land's American league lead
to three games over both the
Yankees and White Sox. It
also insured the fast-breaking
Indians their ninth triumph
in 10 games this season.
Pitches Scoreless Ball
Rookie Jim Perry, making
hii major league debut,
started for Cleveland but was
knocked out in a three-run
fifth. Dick Brodowski took
over, held the Tigers scoreless
the rest of the way-he hasn't
been scored on in four ap
pearances yet this season-and
earned his second victory. Ray
Narleski, .who" came to p&
troit in a deal for Martin this
past winter, suffered his
fourth straight loss as the Ti
gers dropped their ninth game
in 10 starts.
The Senators nipped the
Yankees, 3-2, and the Orioles
beat the Red Sox, 8-7, in the
only other American league
games scheduled.
In the National league,
Philadelphia beat Milwaukee,
4-3, to cut the Braves' lead to
half a game; Cincinnati topped
Pittsburgh, 5-2, and Chicago
defeated St. Louis, 6-1. San
Francisco and Los Angeles
were- idle.

ner last season, carried a 2-0
lead into the seventh inning
when the Senators rallied for
all their runs.

Reliever Dick Brodowski
of the Indians was until Thurs
day when he gave up his first
hits of the season in his fourth
appearance -of the year.
; Brodowski yielded three
hits in 4 13 inings but held
Detroit scoreless, and was
credited with Cleveland's
10-4 victory.
So far this year Brodow
ski has not allowed a single
run. Nor did he give up any
in five relief appearances with
the Indians last season.

Ashland-It's fishing season
this week end and the base
ballers of Southern Oregon
college are getting a vacation
prior to the game with Ore
gon Tech next Tuesday at 3
p.m. pn the SOC diamond.
Thus far in the Oregon Col
legiate conference the Raiders
have a 4-1 record, good
enough to keep them in first
place in the defense of their
OCC crown.
Jimmy McAbee, Raider
catcher, leads the hitting sta
tistics with a .425 average.
His hits include two home
runs, a double and a triple.
McAbee has also scored 16
runs and batted in seven in
addition to reaching base 11
times via free passes.
Although batting only .305,
Phil Sword is right along
with McAbee in the slugging
department with two homers,
five doubles, 10 RBi's and sev
en runs scored.
Others Over 300
LeRoy King, .308; Jim
Dietz, .342, and Larry Maurer,
.313, are the only other Raid
er regulars hitting over .300
mark in 13 games.
As a team the Raiders have
a .277 batting average with
109 hits. Eleven have been
doubles, three triples, and
seven home runs.
Don Vannice has the top
earned run average among
the pitchers at 3.73 with Dave
D'Olivo close behind with
3.81. Tom Speelman has a
4.02 ERA.
Vannice has the most strike
outs at 23. He has given up
only nine earned runs in the
21 23 innings he has pitched.
Dale Walter is the top re
liefer with a 1.80 ERA and
pitcher Kermit McLemore has
a 6.97 ERA. Teamwise the
Raiders have a 4.01 ERA.

There was quite a squawk
from many of the fishermen
down here when the game
commission decided to try to
do something for our declin
ing salmon and steelhead runs
and closed the Rogue river
until May 30. Now the young
downstream migrants have a
chance to get to the ocean
without having to run through
such a gauntlet of hooks dis
guised as something either
tasty or interesting. But it
leaves some fishermen with a
feeling of having no place to
fish. This particular column
is an attempt to prove this to
be just a silly notion.
FISHING SPOTS GALORE
It's surprising how many
fishing spots turn up when
you start looking for them.
Starting with the closest
fishing spot and progressing
out to the farthest that
could be considered for a
one-day fishing trip, there
are eight lakes and reser
voirs and at least six
streams open to trout fish
ing this coming Saturday.
This should be enough to
provide plenty of indecision
as to where to go. The lakes
are Willow creek reservoir.
Squaw lakes, Howard prai
rie reservoir. Lake of the
Woods, Big Bend reservoir,
Klamath lake and Agency
lake. The streams) are Up
per Elk and Big Butte
creeks, the upper , Rogue
and its tributaries. Keen
and Jenny creeks, and the
Klamath river.
LAKES FOR BIG FISH
A six inch trout is the min
imum size the law allows but
there isn't any limit on the
maximum size and some of
the lakes have fish of a size
to give palpitation of the
breastbone to the calmest of
anglers. Squaw lakes will
have fish up to about 13
inches long and good fishing
is possible from the shores for
those without boats. Lake of
the Woods should have rain
bows up to 17 inches maxi
mum. Willow creek reservoir
rainbows will scale up to 22
inches with sufew native cut
throat over the two foot mark.
Howard prairie reservoir
plants should be 8 to 10 inches
long now. (I got a hot tip that
the construction workers on
the Talent project were catch
ing natives last year and they
were running up to two
pounds. And now they're, a
year older!)
OVER THE DIVIDE
Big Bend reservoir was
created by the new dam on
the Klamath river just be
low the Green Springs road
crossing. It is about tnree
miles long and contains 3,
600 acre-feet of water.
Around 10,000 legal size
rainbows were planted a
couple of weeks ago and .
there are a number of fish
being caught running up to

comes along to scare the un
prepared fisherman. Klam
ath lake opens in the upper
end around the Rocky point
area and there is always a
chance of hooking a really
big one if 4 and 5 pounders
seem sort of slow. Harri
man's resort still has a few
boats available. Agency lake
is above Klamath lake and
has browns as well as rain
bows running up to about
5 pounds or better.
CREEKS AND RIVERS
For big fish the Klamath
river, either in California or
Oregon, is the best bet. There
are a few summer steelhead
in the Hornbrook area and
the river has resident fish of
good size in Oregon on up to
the Keno area. Keen and Jen
ny creeks are crossed by the
Green Springs road and pro
vide nice, tasty catches of
trout, some of them over a
foot long. The Rogue river
will be open above Laurel
hurst bridge and anglers
ought to find a few fish over,
16 inches long in the forks or
other upper tributaries. Big
Butte creek always has some
big fish available on opening
day. They come from below
the deadline at the Cobleigh
bridge and from the hatchery
at Butte Falls, though there
are usually a few old moss
backs who. survived the sea
son last year. Elk creek used
to have one of the best sea
son run cut throat runs in the
Rogue drainage and the lucky
angler might find a few above
the deadline at Burnt Peak
road crossing.
A WIDE CHOICE
This is a brief rundown
on the available fishing to
be found this Saturday. I
think there is a lot of water
and variety of trout fishing
from which to make a
choice as to where to. If the
main objective is to enjoy
oneself and not to catch a
limit every day, any choice
is a good one.
WHAT BAIT. WHICH LURE?
For lake fishing I would
like to recommend a small
lure on a light line. Gang
trolls, like the ford fender,
will perhaps produce more
fish but they are very unsat
isfying unless the fish is quite
large. Still fishing with eggs
or worms can catch fish, but
it is a well known fact that
chumming is an illegal aid to
many still fishermen. For the
streams garden hackle or sin
gle eggs ought to find many a
willing taker. Roll it on the
bottom and work it into the
deeper eddies and pockets,
this and a bit of luck will soon
have the reel singing.
THE OPTIMIST'S CORNER
The people who live in,
this valley and appreciate
the gifts of nature, be it the
primitive forest or the lure
of seeking her fish and
game, are surrounded by a
treasure which money can
not buy. The privileges we
enjoy in the forest and on
the streams and lakes are
denied to many who live
their lives in brick and con
crete worlds. We are fortu
nate but if we aren't wise
in our use of these gifts,
they can slowly but surely
be taken from us. So while
we enjoy these values to
day, we should realize that
we'll keep them only if we
. are willinn to finfct n L-nnn
