directed by Bruce Matheny.
A school room scene and the

Wagon Riders
Meet Indians
Lawrence, Kans.-4JPD-Seven
covered wagons rumbling west
to Oregon stopped for a rest
period here Wednesday after
noon and held an informal
pow-wow with the Indians.
Indians from the Haskill
school here, dressed in full
costume, met the Centennial
caravan entering the city.
They clambered about the
Conestogas land, did a war
dance while thousands of per
sons lined the streets to wel
come the train.
The Lawrence Chamber of
Commerce presented the cara
van with a birthday cake top
ped with four candles, signify
ing the four days the wagons
have been on the trail.
History was 'met four miles
west of the city, where wagon
riders saw original ruts of the
first wagons to cross the trail
over a hundred years ago. The
field has 'been unplowed in
that time and the ruts have
been preserved.

tering last week by use of 400
feet of hose, the hand pump
in the cemetery and a bucket.

Quentin Convicts
Rap Officials
Over Punishment
San Quentin, Calif. - (UPD -Two
young convicts have bit
Prison officials because they
terly criticized San Quentin
were punished for holding a
terrified woman at knife-point
for six hours in an escape at
tempt. Billy Joe Wright, 26-year-old
burglar, was transferred
to Folsom Prison-the state's
maximum security institution.
He threatened that he might
try to "go over the wall"
again.
William D. Werner, 24, also
a convicted burglar, was or
dered to the California medi
cal facility at Vacaville for
psychiatric examination. He
said he couldn't understand
why he has been sent to a
"nut house."
Interviewed After Hearing
Both men spoke to newsmen
after hour-long hearings be
fore the prison disciplinary
board Wednesday.
"These people (prison offic
ials) can drive you to a point
where you will do anything,"
Wright grumbled. "I won't say
yes or no on the question of
whether I will try to escape
again."
But he warned that if he
decided to go, the walls
wouldn't stop him.
"I'd just as soon get shot
on the walls as anywhere
else," he said.
Werner told newsmen he
didn't think he would ever try
another escape, but he was
bitter about his transfer to
Vacaville.
"I'd like to know the reason
for sending me there-to a nut
house," he said. "I'm not a
nut. If you place a man where
nuts run the yard, you don't
know-I might end up a nut."
Both Escape Solitary
However, each man escaped
a sentence of 29 days in soli
tary confinement for their
escape attempt.
Warden Fred R. Dickson
said isolation punishment
could not be transferred from
one prison to another.
Wright and Werner escaped
Tuesday and kidnaped Mrs.
Louise Gschwend, 45, and a
fishing companion, Douglas
Harrison, 62. They held Mrs.
Gschwend at the end of a pier
under threat of death until
Marin County District Attor
ney William O. W e i s s i c h
promised he would not prose
cute them for kidnap.
State Attorney General
Stanley Mosk had the power
to overrule Weissich's promise
-but said he would not.
