ASNE Refusal of
TV Coverage for
Casiro Talk Hit
Washington (ITD The
American Society of News
paper Editors, a champion of
free access to the news, was
embroiled today in a brisk
dispute with broadcasters over
the application of that prin
ciple to coverage of its own
annual meeting.
The controversy, one of the
sharpest in the ASNE's his
' tory, blew up around the fea
ture attraction of the society's
three-day program, an appear
ance Friday afternoon by Cu
ban Prime Minister Fidel Cas
tro. Ban Protested
Broadcasters protested an
announcement by ASNE presi
dent George W. Healy Jr. ban
ning television coverage of
Castro's speech and the ques-tion-and-answer
period follow
ing it.
Healy said radio networks
would be permitted to cover
Castro's appearance, over a
single pooled microphone,
either for live broadcast or
transcription for later broad
cast. But TV cameramen will
be restricted to taking pictures
of Castro in an anteroom be
fore his speech begins.
The Radio and Television
Correspondents Association of
Washington protested to Healy
that this decision was "an
arbitrary suppression of free
, dom of access to the news"
the very kind of suppression
which "the ASNE has so long
fought valiantly against.
Shocked by Refusal

dent of the National Associa
tion of Broadcasters, wired
Hpalv that. "We are shocked
and bewildered by your refus
al to permit television cover
age . . . we cannot conceive of
your taking this position in
view of your historic struggle
to preserve and maintain free
access to the news."
John F. Lewis, chairman of
the Freedom of Information
Committee of the. Radio-Television
News Directors Associ
ation, said, "The news in
dustry cannot stand as a house
divided. Equal access for all
editors to uphold, whether
they tell the story in printed
words or in front of micro
phones and cameras."
Society Stands Pal
After reviewing the issue
with the fuU ASNE board of
directors, Healy said the so
ciety is standing pat on its
decision.
He told a reporter "it
simply would not be feasible"
to allow television cameras
and their bulky accessories in
side the Presidential Ballroom
of the Hotel Statler where
Castro will speak.
YMCA Government
Program Conducted
The 12th annual Young
Men's Christian association's
youth and government state
legislature got under way in
Salem last Thursday.
Miss Barbara Tyler, speaker
of the house, of Medford, call
ed the house to order, and
Roger Hamar, Portland, presi
dent of the senate, opened the
senate session Friday morn
ing. Friday afternoon, YMCA
committees met to discuss and
vote on bills assigned to the
groups. Committees voted on
the bills according to their
priority.
Gov. Mark Hatfield spoke
at a dinner Friday night, after
which members attended the
Governor's Ball at South Sa
lem High school. A king and
queen were elected to reign
over the ball.
Members of each house Sat
urday morning discussed and
voted on respective bills. The
first part of the afternoon ses
sion was spent in passing and
rejecting bills and later Gov.
Robert Ott called a joint ses
sion at which he reviewed
bills he had signed.
Operetta Scheduled
At Hedrick Friday,
The operetta, "The Fortune
Teller," will be presented by
Hedrick Junior High school at
8 p.m. Friday at Hedrick Jun
ior High.

sic by Victor Herbert and is
directed by Carrol Graber, vo
cal music instructor. Assisting
is Jerry McDougall,.speech in
structor. Students participating in
, the cast include Mike Gan
non, Tom Deakins, Dennis
Brumback, Harold Reid, Mike
Higgins, Mike McCullough,
Fred Thompson, Kathy Allen,
Chuck McNair, Vicky Enders
and Sherry Lambert.
