without a loss in his career.

and two singles to lead the
Cardinals' attack on Johnny

including a grand slam. Score,
looking like the strikeout
king of 1956, retired 19 Tigers
in succession between Rocky
Bridges' first-inning single
and Gail Harris' seventh- in
ning homer.
'Bill Skowron knocked in
five runs with a homer,
double and single and six
other Yankees had two hits
each m a 17-hit assault on
three Baltimore pitchers. Don
Larsen yielded six hits and
three' runs in seven innings
and then rookie Jim Coates
finished up with two shutout
innings. The Yankees routed
loser Arnold Portocarrero in
a nine-run third inning-largest
major league rally of the
year so far.
Dick Gernert drove in two j
runs with a homer and a
single and Gene Stephens had
two doubles to lead the Red
Sox to their first win. Murray
Wall yielded one hit and a
run over the last three innings
after taking over for winner

Pirates Purchase
Giel From Giants
Pittsburgh -UPD- The Pitts
burgh Pirates have announced
the purchase of righthanded
pitcher Paul Giel from the
San Francisco Giants for the
waiver price.
The Pirates optioned right
hander Curt Raydon to Co
lumbus of the International
league on a 24-hour recall to
make room for the former
University of Minnesota All
America halfback.
Giel, who became a bonus
baby with the Giants in'1954,
showed a 4-5 record last year
with two of his wins coming
against the Bucs.
Raydon, who carded an 8-4
record as a Pirate rookie last
season, underwent surgery for
a finger cyst just prior to
spring training and was sent
to the farm club for more
conditioning.

rill and Dave Pope in trades.
Vancouver This team lost
four pitchers who won 41
games last season and that
hurts, but Manager Charlie
Metro believes Charlie Bea-

up the slack. Good defensive
outfield, but the club still

fielder Carlos Bernier is back,
to give speed and. power,
along . with inf ielders Kenny
Toothman and Nick Barone.
Sacramento The S o 1 o n s
have Elliott back as manager,
in a new regime under civic
ownership and a new working
agreement with Milwaukee,
which should help. The out
field has Carlos Paula, a
heavy hitter. In the infield is
slick-fielding shortstop Buddy
Peterson, and the veteran
Nippy Jones at first. The So
lons have pretty good pitching
in Joe Stanka, Bill Dailey,
Carl Gree and promising
Braves' farm hands Terence
Fox and Winston Brown.
Spokane This club has
Bobby Bragan as manager,
and big Steve Bilko at first
base. Those two alone will
draw fans. The Indians have
some promising pitching in
Roger Craig, Bob Giallombar
do, Phil Paine and Chris Ni
cholosi; and a good double
play combination in Tony
Roig and Maury Will.
Seattle Freddie Hutchin
son is back, and so are dreams
of a pennant, last won under
"Hutch" in 1955. Fred has vet

dy and Eddie Kazak in his in
field; Elmo valo and "Peanuts
Lowrey in the outfield. The
big question is will they hold
up over the long grind.
Gonzales Gets
Money Lead

Gonzales regained the money
leadership of the Jack Kramer
pro tennis tour Tuesday night
when he defeated Lew Hoad,
14-12, 6-3.
The two were tied in money
earned before the match. But
Gonzales, defending pro cham
pion, added $400 for his vic
tory for a total of $15,050.
Hoad's $200, the loser's share,
increased the Australian's in
come to $14,850.
In another singles match,
Mai Anderson whipped Ash
ley Cooper' in straight sets,

'Williams, hoping for a spot
in the heavyweight rankings,
has cooled 36 opponents in
compiling a 44-2 record. He
has won his last 11 fights in
a row since his discharge from

major baseball league is ready
for the 1961 season, the Cin
cinnati Post and Times-Star
said in a copyrighted story by
Sports Editor Pat Harmon.
Harry Wismer, nationally
known broadcaster, said the
backers had met three weeks
aog and pledged the money.
Harmon wrote: "Warren
Giles, president of the Nation
al league,, said a week ago:
'It will be much easier to
form a new eight-team major
league than to expand the
present leagues from eight to
ten teams.' Today that third
major league is closer than
you think," Harmon said.
Harmon said the teams in
the league will be New York,
Houston, Montreal, Toronto,
Dallas, Minneapolis-St. Paul,
and two to be selected.
"The money is ready, and
will go to the best location,"
the Post and Times-Star said.

cause Jamie K. was used up
too much in the Wood Memor
ial, Norris did not ship the
colt to Kentucky. Jamie K.,
therefore, was fresh and
ready for the preakness and

Crown. In each race Jamie K.
gave Native Dancer a rough
time, finishing only a neck

had to cancel. While the com
mission members went into
executive session, Moyer and
Sid Flaherty, Phil's manager,
announced a change in plans
and said the bout would be
held in some other city.

Norris bred his first Derby
starter at his Spring Hill
Farm near Lexington where
Easy Spur was foaled on
March 6, 1956.
Easy Spur earned a trip to
Louisville with a sparkling
triumph in the Florida Derby
at Gulfstream Park, a track
at which he has done most of
his winning in two years of
racing. Easy" Spur, who is
rather on the small side, is
undefeated at the track with
a five-for-five record com
pared with his overall record
of eight wins in 16 races.
In the Florida Derby, with
William Hartack riding, Easy
Spur was at his best. The
little gelding, like Jamie K.,
a son of Crowfoot but out of
the mare Easy Reeling, hung
up 1:47 15 for the mile and
one-eighth, only two-fifths of
a second off the world record.
And no matter how Easy
Spur fares in the first of the
Triple Crown classics, nobody
can question his right to be
in it. Hartack probably will
ride.
BOWLING
The Kiwanis Junior High
league finished its league play
Saturday with the Johnny
Rebs winning first place.
The tie for second place
will be played off next Satur
day between the Heads and
Ronchy Rollers. The high
game of the season goes to

Phil Archer, first man up
in the game for Rogue River,
got the Chieftains' only run.
He got on base on an error
and went the rest of the way
on two passed balls. Butte
Falls also tallied in the first
inning on a walk to Doug
Fisher and singles by Ellis
and Ferguson.
Ferguson had three hits in
three times up for the Log
gers and Ellis hit two for
three. Cavin, pitching four
innings, yielded three hits and
two walks and fanned one

eral Manager Stanley Bucky
Harris would show up to
answer charges of racial dis
crimination next Tuesday.
The state commission
against discrimination voted
Tuesday to ask Yawkey and
Harris to attend next week's
meeting. The formal invita
tion came several hours after
the National .Association for
Advancement of Colored Peo
ple charged the Sox with
racial bias following a con
troversy over the optioning
cf shortstop Jerry Pumpsie
Green.
A Red Sox spokesman said
Harris was ill with the flu
and that he reserved com
ment on the commission's in
vitation. Yawkey was at his planta
tion in South Carolina and
would not comment on the
affair, the spokesman said.
Commission Chairman Mrs.
Mildred Mahoney said at the
conclusion of Tuesday's 90
minute hearing that "there is
enough here to warrant ac
tion of some type."
Could Be Conference
This action could take the
form of a conference between
the Red Sox and Negro lead
ers or it could wind up in

Red Sox had an anti-Negro
policy going back about a
dozen years. He said the Sox
"summarily dismissed" Jack
ie Robinson and Sam Jethroe,
both of whom made the grade
with other major league
teams, and "cold shouldered"
an opportunity to hire Willie
Mays.
Harris, (in a letter read to
the commission, said that
Green, who apparently start
ed out the spring training
season in good shape, had
been optioned to Minneapolis
of the American association
so he could play regularly
and "develop in his profes
sion." ' .
He said the club was doing
all it could to develop Negro
players. The Sox have seven
Negroes in their farm system.
They are the only major
league team that has never
used a Negro in regular
season play.
