Lincoln Among
Quietest Cars
One of the quietest running
automobiles on the American
highway is the 1959 Lincoln,
which uses specially designed
equipment tested by Lincoln
engineers.
Medford Motors, 225 South
Riverside- ave., reports that
two basic aims of unitized
construction in the Lincoln
and Continental are strength
and silence. Strength lies in
the integrated body and frame,
made of one massive piece of
welded steel components; si
lence is based on vibration
and noise tests made of each
metal body component.
While the "body-in-white"
is tuned properly to eliminate
bothersome noises, the engine
is made to rest quietly on
large rubber mounts. A va
riety of sound deadeners and
heat insulation are applied in
side the cars.
New Conditioning
Used in Cadillacs
A new method of air con
ditioning, distributing cool air
throughout the entire car, is
offered in the 1959 Cadillac.
Three air sources located in
the lower instrument "panel
may be individually adjusted.
The system allbws for use
of 100 per cent outside air, or
up to 80 per cent reciculating
air mixed with -20 per cent
from the outside.
Cadillacs are sold in Med
ford by Skinner Buick-Cadil-Iac.

Development of New
Electric Motor in
American Corp. Plan
Detroit-A joint long-range
development project to ex
plore the possibilities of a rev
olutionary electric automo
bile has been announced by
George Romney, president of
American Motors corporation,
and Irving I. Schachtel, presi
dent of Sonotone corporation,
Elmsford, N.Y., electronics
firm.
"If this project is success
ful, it could open up a whole
new area of automove pow
er," Romney said.
At present, the chief draw
back of electric automobiles
is the need for recharging the
batteries after less than 100
miles of travel. Aim of the
new AM-Sonotone project, is
to develop an electrical pow
erplant which would be con
stantly recharged during oper
ation by a generator operated
by a small high-performance
engine. Similar experimental
powerplants tried in the past
have failed because of exces
sive battery size and weight
capacity and short life.
The "heart" of the vehicle
project will be a sintered-
plate, nickel - cadmium bat
tery, first produced in the
United States by Sonotone, is
smaller and lighter than the
conventional batteries of com
parable energy output.
While it costs substantially
more to produce, Schachtel
said, it can withstand great
overloads or surges of power
and can be recharged in a '
fraction of the time of con
ventional batteries. It has a
long life and the original bat
tery is expected to last the
life of an electric auto, he
added.
Under the joint project, re
search work will take place
at plants of both American
Motors and Sonotone.
Decide on Project
Romney cautioned that the
program, which could take
several years, might not re
sult in a vehicle which would
prove feasible and economi
cal, but "we decided to launch
this development project to
see if a more efficient auto
mobile might result."

NEW FROM ALLSTATE ...the company founded by Sears
ickness, Accident and
Hospital Insurance
-to protect you against today's rising cost of medical care
-to help replace income you lose because you're sick or hurt
-to help provide for your family if you're killed in an accident
New Selector Plan lets you
choose the exact type and amount
of protection that's right for
your needs ... . and your budget!
Most families are not aware how inflation
has watered down the value of the policies
they now have. Too many take for granted
that having "some insurance" or work
men's compensation is all the protection
they need. -
It is a tragic fact that today only 1 family
in 10 is financially protected against the
ruinous costs of lingering illness or serious
accident.
Too many people risk going along with
what they have because they assume that
rising costs have priced adequate cover
age beyond their reach. But now Allstate's
Accident and Sickness Insurance helps
you solve these problems at a cost you
can afford.
WHAT THIS NEW POLICY BRINGS YOU
Here, in one flexible policy, you will find
a broad selection of top-value coverages.
You can select exactly the protection you
need to close the gaps in your present
insurance at surprisingly little cost. This
sensible plan lets you buy only what you
need, without waste or duplication pays
in addition to any insurance you may now
have. Or if you have no protection, it can
be used as a sound basic plan.
HERE ARE A FEW OF THE WAYS ALLSTATE'S
NEW PLAN COULD FIT YOUR NEEDS:
YOU MAY NOW HAVE
An employer or
group plan that
would pay you
only for a few
months after acci
dent or sickness
disables you.
YOU MAY NOW HAVE
A basic hospitali
zation plan which
may pay you for
only a few weeks.
YOU MAY NOW HAVE
Insurance with
relatively few
benefits that
pays only a small
part of the actual
costs of a long,
lingering dis
ability. YOU MAY NOW HAVE
Savings that could
keep your family
going for 6 months
or a year if you
were killed in an
accident.
YOU SHOULD HAVE An AllstaU
coverage that will pay you a
monthly, tax-free income so
you can provide for your fam
ily's living expenses while you
are disabled. (Maximum: 6
years if totally disabled from
sickness; for life if totally dis
abled from accident; 6 month
limit for partial disability.)
You can select the amount of
income protection you want
up to $400 a month for total
disability up to $200 a
month for partial disability.
YOU SHOULD HAVE An AUstat
coverage that will begin pay
ing after your present policy
stops, to give you protection
against in-hospital expenses
of serious, drawn-out illness
or disability . . . tbst pays
75 of hospital expenses for
as long as 2 years for each
accident or illness for each
member of your family. ( Max
imum payment: $5,000 per
person.) Or you can strengthen
your basic hospitalization
plan with an Allstate cover
age that will pay daily hos
pital expenses in addition to
the protection you now have.
YOU SHOULD HAVE An Allstate
coverage to help you with the
major expenses of doctor, sur
geon (including specialist)
care, nursing costs and many
other medical services.
YOU SHOULD HAVE An Allstste
coverage that pays $15,000
cash if you are killed in prac
tically any type of accident.
Pays in addition to any other
payments made by this policy.
HOW WOULD YOU MAKE OUT? If you're like most
people, your present insurance would cover
only one-third of your expenses, should sick-
i or accident strike.
You're In good hands with
Ifs human nature to put it off . . .
but don't. The average man is disabled 17 timet
during his lifetime, racing odds like these, you
owe it to yourself to get the facts.
