William,' D. Hassett, who
was a secretary to both presi
dents Roosevelt and Truman,
has embarked on an entirely
new career at the ripe young
age of 78.
Hassett has been in Wash
ington recently recording
some of his more historic
memories for a series of radio
broadcasts. Which has led
some of his more raffish
friends to label him as the
disc jockey of the serutan
crowd.
The venerable Hassett, who
looks somewhat like Carl
Sandburg, takes such kidding
in stride. He's just signed con
tracts for newspaper serializa
tion of his new book, "F.D.R.
Off The Record" and for book
publication in England.
No Hesitation
One of President Eisenhow
er's close advisers pointed out
the other day just why he did
not hesitate in predicting with
sonorous finality that there
will be no all-out war between
the United States and Russia.

Castro in Washington
Should the President decide
to remain here at the Augusta
National Golf Clubt through
next week - and the educated
betting is that he will there

Castro is scheduled to ad
dress the American Society of
Newspaper Editors in Wash
ington late next week; then
visit New York and Boston
for other speaking engage

The betting Is that the Presi
dent will fly back to Washing
ton to fill speaking engage
ments on the night of April 13
and the morning of April 14,
then hustle back to( Augusta
for the rest of the week.
Actually, if the Eisenhower
schedule takes this form, it
will not of necessity be a case
of his leaving town to avoid a
meeting with the mercurial
Cuban leader. Eisenhower
long ago expressed a desire
to take a long vacation this

Critical Condition

unconscious Russian seaman
was in critical condition at an
Air Force hospital here today
following a dramatic three
day rescue effort off the Aleu
tian islands.
Evgenij Ivanovich G n e u-
shev, 23, Vladivostok, was
rushed to the hospital at El-
mendorf Air Force base
Thursday from Cold Bay in
the Aleutians by a Coast
Guard plane.
A medical bulletin said he
was suffering from flacid pa
ralysis of the right arm and
both legs. He was being fed
intravenously. There was no
indication of active hemor
rhage.
Gneushev was injured sev
eral days ago when he fell
into a hold on the Russian re
frigerator ship Pischavaya
Industriya which was with
the Russian fishing fleet in
the Bering sea. The Coast
Guard cutter Storis took the
injured seaman off the Rus
sian ship at ' Akun bay and
rushed him to Cold bay where
he was picked up by the
plane and brought here.

In Salem, the highway com
mittee of the house of repre
sentatives approves an in
crease of one cent in the Oregon-gasoline
tax. The present
tax is six cents per gallon. If
the legislature approves the
house . highway committee's
proposal and the governor
signs it into law, the tax
would be raised to seven cents
per gallon.
It is estimated that the one
cent increase in the tax will
bring in six million dollars a
year. Of this amount, the state
will get about $4,200,000. The
rest will go to the cities and
the counties. v

if Oregon MATCHES THE
FEDERAL GRANT.
Oregon, of course, wants
and NEEDS the roads. That is
the nub of the situation
Oregon didn't need the roads,
it would be a horse of another
color. In that event, we would
be money ahead if we de
clined' to match the federal
grant in full.
SINCE Oregon does want and
needs the roads, the house
highway committee's proposal
boils down to this simpl
question:
HOW WOULD YOU RATH
ER PAY YOUR SHARE?
Personally; I'd rather pay
my share of it at the rate of
a penny for every gallon of
gasoline purchased and
poured into my tank than to
dig it all up at once in one
lump sum.
That's about the long and
the short of it.
A T THIS point, let's take
look at these federa
grants.
They aren't manna from
heaven.
They come out of money
levied in the form of taxes by
the federal government upon
the Deople of the United
States. The people of the
states, the counties and the
cities who ask for and receive
these grants PAY THEIR
SHARE OF THE FEDERAL
TAXES THAT PRODUCE
THE MONEY.
It's as if a child should say
to its father: "Daddy, I want
$100 to buy me a pony. If
youll give me the money, I'll
break open my piggy bank
and give you $90 so that you
can give me the $100."
It's just that simple.
AS A MATTER of fact, in
Oreeon'i ease, it's even
simple?.
According to figures com
piled recently by Tax Foun-
dation, Inc., a non-political,
non-partisan private organiza
tion devoted to tax research,
for every dollar Oregon GETS
from the federal government
it PAYS BACK to the federal
government 96 cents in fed
eral taxes.
That is to say:
Out of this 56 million dol
lars granted by Uncle Sam to
his children in Oregon he will
TAKE BACK from them in
the form of federal taxes the
sum of $53,760,000. All they
will get from their kind old
uncle, when the books are oal-
anced. will be the sum of $2,-
240;000.
Well
If Oregon NEEDS THE
ROADS, even that gift will
be welcome. But if Oregon
DIDN'T need the roads, it
would be a gift horse that
should be looked in the mouth.

In the case of our neigh
bors in California, it IS Dif
ferent. According to the Tax
Foundation figures, for every
dollar California gets from
the federal government it pays
back $1.04 in federal taxes.
That changes the California
picture.

As Result of Fire
Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
(DPD-Bard college was closed
today by a fire which knock
ed out the school's heating
plant and destroyed Orient
hall, a studio building for the
arts.
No one was injured in the
two - hour blaze which oc
curred Thursday night when
the hall was empty.
Tt was the second fire at
the college within 24 hours
and ah investigation into pos
sible arson was started.
Bard oilicials said that the
school would be closed for
about 10 days.

things to give him confidence.
Victor K. - But sports
would be better than music.
Evelyn K. - My husband
and I are having a serious
disagreement about our old
est boy, Richard.
Dick is now 11 and is the
size of the average 8-year-old.
As a matter of fact, his 8-
year-old sister is two inches
taller than he is. We have
been saying for years that
he'll shoot up suddenly, but
we have good reason to doubt
this. There are-, very short
people in -both our families
and the doctor says that
Dick's bone structure leads
him to think the boy will
never reach average height.
I feel that Dick needs
things to help give him con
fidence. He is" not up to par
in sports, so I am trying to
get him to study a musical
instrument. His teachers say
he is quite musical, but he
refuses to practice. This is
partly because of my hus
band's attitude. He laughs at
the, whole thing and says I'll
only give Dick worse prob
lems if I try to make a long
hair out of him too.
Victor K. - I have nothing
against Dick's studying music
if Evelyn didn't make such a
production out of it. She
wouldn't let him go to the
ordinary music school that all
the kids in our community
attend. She started him with
one of the top teachers in a
nearby city. This man didn't
even want to take Dick be
cause he mainly teaches -advanced
students but Evelyn
talked him into it.
In my opinion this man
gives Dick too tough a work
out and that's why the kid
doesn't want to practice. He
doesn't like the exercises he
is given, but he does , enjoy
popular music and can pick
this up by ear. Why make
him be a longhair if he does
n't want to be?

I think that Dick would be
better off anyhow if he con
centrated on sports. He's
pretty strong and agile in
spite of his size, and is a fair
ball player. I feel that sports
will help him grow. Anyway,
he'll be able to meet the oth
er boys on their own ground.
Th Council Evelyn and
Victor are making the same
basic mistake. They want to
stuff their boy with confi
dence because they feel he
has a serious shortcoming.
But confidence cannot be
put into anyone. It has to
come from within. And one
way it grows from within is
as a result of the parents'
attitude. To a great extent
the child's attitude toward
himself is a reflection of his
parents' attitude - or what he
believes is his parents' atti
tude. The world is full of stories
about short men who made
history, but what is lacking
is the story of their home life.
If their parents had regarded
them as defective, it is doubt
ful that many would have had
the courage to go into the
world and prove themselves.
Surely, behind all of those
men were parents or other
relatives who thought of them
as capable, clever, persistent
or endowed with other vir
tues. Evelyn and Victor need to
show their boy that they have
confidence in his qualities.
These are the qualities that
will help him deal with the
world. They should not make
him feel that he needs various
props to have him from his
inadequacies. He may feel this
himself and he will find his
own props with a little en
couragement from his par
ents, but he'll balk if he is
made to feel that his parents
expect him to put forth a
particularly big effort to
make up for a particular de
fect. Evelyn and Victor should
try to set aside their fears

Killer To Die

Baldonado, 25, will ,be
formally sentenced Tuesday
to die in the gas chamber for
his part in the "for hire" mur
der of 30-year-old Olga Dun
can. The ex-convict was con
demned by a Superior court
jury of seven women and five
men Thursday after one hour
and 50 minutes of delibera
tion at the conclusion of his
sentencing hearing.
Balonado became the sec
ond person sentenced to death
in the bizarre murder case of
the attractive, pregnant vic
tim. Mrs. Elizabeth Duncan,
about Dick and learn to enjoy

ties "that are undoubtedly in
him.
