Eugene Denney, the local su
pervisor for Farmers Home
Administration, stated this
week.

farm buildings. The financing,
Mr. Denney said, is limited to
buildings that are not in ex
cess of those economically es
sential to the farm. Also, this
authority does not nermit re
financing of debts or payment
oi any bias incurred prior to
loan approval.
The terms for the loans nr
favorable, Denney added. Re
payment periods run up to 33
years with interest at 4 Der
cent, the actual period being
adjusted to family resources.
All farm-housing loans must
be adequately secured by a
real estate lien, which may,
however, be a second mortgage.
Plan Explained
The local countv committe
certifies the elieibilitv nf a
family and gives their recom
mendation for a loan. An ap
plicant, to be eligible, must
own t farm unit of such size
and production that it is con
sidered a farm unit and not
a rural resiripnee Tho -mini
mum size has been lowered
so that a unit producing at
least $400 worth of commod
ities based on 1944 prices may
qualify. As with other loans,
the family must show that
their credit needs cannot be
obtained from other sources ,
on terms they can be expected
to meet.
Applicant families choose
their own building plans, hire
their own carpenters or con
tractors and purchase mater
ials where they please. Thev
must provide plans and speci
fications which will adequate
ly show the job to be done
and that construction stand
ards will be met. Also, Den
ney pointed out, families are
encouraged to contribute as
much of their own labor as
they can in the construction.

Lacking Wafer
Burns -UPD- The worst irri
gation season in 15 years is
in sight for Harney Basin
ranchers, it was reported
Wednesday at the annual
water forecast meeting here.
Oregon Snow Survey Sup
ervisor W. T. Frost said the
mountain snow pack is only
48 per cent of normal. He
added that lower . elevation
snow already has melted
without bringing any sizable
amount of water.
Some 85,000 acres of mead
ow hay land is expected to
produce only one -third of
normal crop. Water holes and
small stock ponds are either
dry or low and the three
largest streams in the county
are forecast to run below
normal.

ing herds to conserve water
and wise use of water in irrigation.
'Pioneers' Leave
For Independence
Eugene - (LTD - A group of
modern pioneers left here by
bus today for a trip to Kansas
City. The return trip will take
them 130 days.
They are members of the
"On to Oregon Cavalcade"
who will return in six cover
ed wagons along the old Or
egon trail to help publicize
the state's centennial.
Leader of the 25-member
group is Gordon 'Tex" Serpa
of Ashland.

after a big sendoff the day
before to be attended by
former President Harry

Portland Jobless
Protest Fizzles
Portland - (UPD - Four men
carrying two banners paraded
briefly in downtown Portland
Wednesday afternoon in what
had been expected to be a
larger protest against unem
ployment. Six policemen escorted the
four men through the streets.
Banners read "Distribute Sur
plus Food" and "Full Employment."
