night in their final prep at
Jacksonville, Fla. They lost
a 5-4 verdict to the Braves in
the same city Tuesday night
and now have a 12-9 spring

opposition.
Perhaps the biggest flops of
the exhibition season were the
New York Yankees and the

the Braves ' were stumbling

. The Boston Red Sox blew
their last chance to catch the

the Chicago Cubs at Victoria,
Tex. The Red-Sox went ahead
7-6 in the top of the 11th on
a homer by Dick Gernert but
the Cubs rallied for two runs
in their half of the inning, in
cluding a pinch homer by Al
vin Dark.
The Cincinnati Reds edged
the Yankees, 3-2, on a lead-off

ried the Cleveland Indians to
a 3-2 triumph over the San
Francisco Giants in Tuesday's
other exhibitions.
The Yankees, playing be

New Drug
By GARY KALE .
New York -UPD- A new
drug which might help ath
letes break world records was
frowned upon today by a high
official in amateur sports.
Dan Ferris, honorary secretary-treasurer
of the Amateur
Athletic union, said any ath
lete found using a drug would
be ineligible for any competi
tion under AAU rules.
Unusual fatigue-inhibiting
properties of the new drug
known as t-h-a-m-was discov
ered by two government
scientists, who said physiolo
gists believe it would enable
athletes to establish new speed
records in long distance run
ning and swimming and other
type competition. Its previous
usage was limited to making
soaps and detergents:
Ferris, who has been con
nected with amateur athletics
for over 50 years, emphasized
that neither AAU nor Interna
tional federation rulings per
mit anyone to enter an event
under the influence of a drug.
"Drugs to stimulate athlet
ic prowess are nothing new,"
Ferris said. "I've been hear
ing reports of their usage for
the past four or five years."
Dr. Robert Galambos, chief
of the Walter Reed Army In
stitute of Research's neuro
physiology department, said
physiologists venture guesses
that a man could knock 10
seconds off the world record

Daytona Beach Speedway
Temporarily Off-Limits
For Roadster-Type Cars
Daytona Beach, Fla. -(DPD-
The new Daytona Beach In
ternational speedway has
been temporarily put off-limits
for roadster-type racers
following the death of tw of
America's top big car drivers.
Speedway president Bill
France said a 300-mile race
featuring Indianapolis type
cars scheduled July 4 would
not be held. Instead, he said,
there would be a substitute
250-mile late model stock car
race.
- Racing director Henry
Banks of the United States
Auto club said in Indianapolis
the big car race was tentative
ly switched to Raleigh, N.C.
' Banks said Daytona would
not be used by roadster-type
cars pending "research and
development."
Teague. Amick Die
Veteran driver Marshall
Teague and 1958 "rookie of
the year" George Amick were
killed in accidents on the fast
2M mile' asphalt track which
opened here only last Febru
ary. Both Banks and Pa Purcell,
executive director of Nascar,
said the two-million-dollar
track cannot be blamed, for
the accidents. But both said
the track was "engineered far
ahead of the automotive in
dustry." "
. "We couldn't condemn Day
tona as being dangerous,"
Banks said. "It's a fine track,
but it's still way ahead of the
equipment now available."
He said speeds of better
than 170 miles per hour and
20 m.p.h. winds created a
dangerous situation which
racing experts believe will be
solved only by engineering
methods.
