Attend Regional
Education Session
More than 200 governors,
state elgislators, college and
university presidents and oth
er state officials will atttend a
regional workshop on "Qual
ity and Opportunity in Higher
Education" this week in San
Francisco.
Frank VanDyke, Medford
attorney and former chairman
of the Western Interstate
Commission for Higher Edu
cation, will leave today for !
the meeting.
Featured speakers at the
workshop will include Dr. Al
vin E. Eurich, vice president
for the Fund for the Advance
ment of Education, and Fred
M. Hechinger, author of "The
Big Red School House," a
study of Russian education
today.

The workshop is sponsored
by the "Western Interstate com
mission, the Western Gover
nors' conference and the
Council of State Governments.
It will be the second annual
meeting of western leaders in
state government and higher
education to discuss problems
facing public universities and
colleges in this region.
The budget session will con
sider the uses and limitations
of "formulas" in assigning
funds to public higher educa
tion systems now used by Col
orado, Texas, Oklahoma, Cal
ifornia and Washington.
The Western Interstate
Commission for Higher Edu
cation will hold its annual
meeting in Medford Aug.
8-10, Van Dyke reported.
Colonel to Head

Neely, a native of Mapleton
and a graduate of the Univer
sity of Oregon, will become
head of the military and air
science department here in
October.
He will replace Col. M. I.
Carter. Both are Air Force of
ficers. Colonel Neely is cur
rently assigned to Headquar
ters of the Air Forces in Ger
many. He served in the Paci
" fic theater during World War
II and holds the Legion of
Merit and Commendation me
dal. Colonel Neely was gradual
ed from the university in 1934
with a bachelors degree in
business administration. He
will have academic rank of
professor of air science in the
university.

holding only 42 per cent nor
mal moisture for the area.
Farmers and ranchers who
irrigate from natural stream
flow were advised to use care
ful water management to
stretch their supply this sum
mer.
