Fashion Picture
Has Color Sparkle
Color, and lots of It, gives
sparkle to the spring fashion
picture. Varied and vibrant
are the hues - pinks, reds, yel
lows, greens, blues, purples,
in fact, most shades of the
spectrum.
While the fashion impor
tance of color was never
greater, it's paradoxical, but
true, that neutrals are enjoy
ing increased popularity.
Navy, beige, gray and black
win renewed interest for two
reasons. In the midst of the
riot of colors, the neutrals
look ultra - fashionable, al
most startling. And, they pro
vide just what is needed to
set off the vivid hues to great
advantage.
Beiges often take on more
than a hint of yellow and
evolve into warm tones of
honey and apricot. This blend
ing of hues occurs frequently
throughout spring fashion, as
pinks are influenced by
mauve and blue, greens min
gle with yellow and yellows
and blues with green.
Checks, flower garden and
paisley prints, glen plaids and
giant plaids, dots - from polka
to coin in size and stripes
represent the most -seen
spring patternings.

Cordage Important Need of Mariner
A fact not recognized by
many boating enthusiasts is
that next to a boat, cordage is
one of the most important
needs of the mariner.
With the advent of man-
made fibers, rope (or "line,"
as the sailor says) is now tail
or-made for superior perform
ance in a specific assignment.
Lines that float, lines that
stretch, lines that don't. For
examDle. nylon withtits
strength, shock absorbing
Qualities, and resistance to
marine growth, is ideal for an
choring and mooring.
However, where the fiber s
elastic property is of great
advantage for certain applica
tions, it is just as much a dis
advantage in many other in
stances, such as the use for
sheets in sailing or for water
ski tow ropes.
For sheets, non-stretching
fibers such as dacron should
be chosen. The new linear
polyethylene is used for water
ski tow lines. Polyethylene
rope floats on top of the
water, keeping it in view and
easily accessible to the skier.
Its buoyancy reduces the prob
ability of entangling the tow
line in the propeller.

Marine Diesels
Are Lightweight,
Lower Silhouettes
In keeping with the grow
ing demand for smaller, more
compact inboard power plants,
the new marine diesel engines
are lighter weight with lower
silhouettes. In addition, many
of the 1959 lines feature smal
ler models more suitable for
use in sailing auxiliaries and
small work boats.
Curtiss-Wright, sole United
States distributor for the Ger
man-built Mercedes-Benz ma
rine engines, has four new en
gines. The fresh air-cooled
models feature -low fuel con
sumption and low weight-to-
horsepower ratio.
Allis-Chalmers 1959 marine
diesels include a new light
weight 844 cubic inch engine
that develops 240 hp at 2,800
rpm and has high horsepower
output per gallon of fuel con
sumed. Another model is the
improved lightweight 85 hp
engine that develops 2,800
rpm. The engine runs smooth
ly with lack of noise and vi
bration and requires a mini
mum of maintenance and
servicing.
Eight New Engines
Eight new engines in the
vee and in-line series, ideal
for either pleasure or work
boats, are offered by Detroit
Diesel for 1959. The firm says
that the new engines were de
signed to a new concept of
compactness, combined with
light weight. The General Mo
tors marine engine division's
line, ranges in horsepower
from 20 to 1,650 for all uses.
Two new air-cooled diesels
have been introduced by Lis
ter Blackstone, English ma
rine engine builder. They are
the 20 and 30 hp models, both
rated at 1,800 rpm. These four
stroke diesels are compact,
light, economical of operation
and require a minimum of
servicing. They feature posi
tive cooling which is provided
by an impeller integral with
the flywheel and fan shroud.
English Engine
Another English marine en
gine builder, Peter, is offering
a new four-cylinder model for
1959 that weighs 511 pounds
and is claimed by the maker
to run a full hour on a single
gallon of diesel fuel. The en
gine is also air cooled. Other
models in the new line of one
to four cylinder engines de
velop up to 20 hp at 3,000 rpm.
, Four new diesel engines,
imported from Sweden by
Volvo Import, are available in
the United States for the first
time. The new Volvo engines
range in horsepower from 11.5
to 46 and eafch has a maximum
rpm of 1,500.

Boaf Losses Occur From Fire, Explosion
The U.S. Coast Guard warns
boat owners that the majority
of motor boat losses usually
occur from either fire or ex
plosion. To provide the utmost
protection, owners should
heed the following safeguards:
1. Gasoline should not be
allowed below decks except in
the proper fuel tanks.
2. No lighted lantern, spark
or flame should be allowed in
the engine or fuel compart
ments. 3. Engine and fuel compart
ments should be ventilated in
such a way that five minutes
after fueling no gasoline vapor
is present.
