In Some Areas ihe Badger
Is Scarce; and it's No Wonder
Up until the badger became
relatively scarce, a Sunday
sport, practiced by a group of
men and dogs, was the digging
out of these animal's burrows.
The reward of the effort and
the idea behind the so-called
"sport" was the pitched bat
tle between the badger and
the dogs after the animal was
uncovered. The badger didn't
have a chance. If it licked the
dogs the brave men hit it over
the head with a shovel.-
A hundred or more years
ago in Europe badgers were
captured alive and later
matched with dogs in an en
closed ring for the entertain
ment of those who were cal
lous enougn to watch. From
these contests probably came
the expression "to badger" or
to harass. This cruel "sport"
was outlawed, but not quite
in time for the European bad
ger is now rare in England and
other parts of Europe.
Rare
Also rare, east of the Missis
sippi river in America where
it was once plentiful, is the
American badger. The badger
actually is flat-footed. The ani
mal is built so low to t h e
ground it looks as if it had
no legs at all from a short
distance away, appearing as
though the body was sliding
along on invisible rollers. The
legs are very short, but pow
erful, capable of digging con
siderably faster than a robust
man with a shovel.
The badger has a broad, flat
head, with a sharp, pointed
muzzle. A broad, white strip
runs from the nose back to
the forehead. A black strip on
either side of the head starts
at the sid- of the nose and runs
back just below the eyes. The
body hair is very coarse and
stiff, colored white and black.
The lower part of the animal
is all black. A badger viewed
in bright sunlight appears red
dish. There are some red hairs
mixed in with the black and
white.
A Flesh Eater
The badger i3 allied with
the weasel and the skunk. Un
like the woodchuck, the bad
ger is a flesh eater like the
weasel. They feed on mice,
rabbits, bird's eggs, and even
snakes. They hunt mostly at

Instruction in the art of
tying flys will be offered boys
11 to 15. A limit of 12 boys
has been set and registrations
can be made at the YMCA.
Instructor for the sessions
will be Jack Crump. The class
will be limited to YMCA mem
bers. There will be a service
charge for materials used dur
ing the lessons.

why the badger has become
relatively scarce. Many excus
es were found to justify the
killing of these animals. Un
der the name "varmint" they
have become the target of ev
ery trigger-happy gunner.
In an effort to sell more
firearms or ammunition, and
thereby make someone a prof
it, the badger has been pic
tured a s a nuisance. Along
with the woodchuck they have
had a difficult time surviving.
Not tnany years, hence the
American badger will only be
another American legend.

Butte Falls highway Sunday
morning, sheriff's officers re
ported. Although the car rolled
over none of the occupants ap
parently were injured, depu
ties said.

Khrushchev Said
Told To Cut Down

Hamburg newpaper's report
that Soviet Premier Nikita
Khrushchev recently had a
fainting spell ties in with the
understanding in Moscow that
he has been told by his doc
tors to cut down on his con
sumption of alcohol.
The Hamburg newspaper
Bild Zeitung carried the story
of the fainting spell, which is
said was not caused by a heart
ailment.
Sources for the story were
said to be diplomats in Hel
sinki. When Khrushchev visit
ed East Germany last month,
he appeared generally to be
following doctors orders on
his alcohol intake.
But the night of Tuesday,
March 10, during a reception
attended by 800 people in the
Soviet Embassy in East Ber
lin, Khruschev "fell off the
wagon."
Khrushchev may have had
a fainting spell that night, ac
cording to a report from Hans
Ulbricht Kemski of Munich's
Suedeutsche Zeitung, who
said he was present when the
Soviet Premier "suffered a
loss of strength."

Bouncers Injured
In Brawl at Dance
New York - (UP1I - A heavy
weight boxer turned bouncer
was stabbed and a companion
shot Sunday pight in a dance
club brawl.
Severio Cesar Brion, 32,
who once fought Joe Louis,
was stabbed severely about
the face, neck and arms as he
attempted to break up the
fight. He was reported in fair
condition at a hospital.
Jesus Santiago, 34, was shot
in the stomach as he tried to
help Brion. He was listed in
critical condition. The two
men had been hired as bounc
ers to keep order at a dance
given by two social clubs.
They were wounded when
a brawl broke out among the
dancers and they tried to re
store order.
