show sponsored jointly by the
Shady Cove PTA and the
Shady Cove student body will
be held on Saturday evening,
April 11, at the Shady Cove
school. The show will be open
to the public and small ad
mission fee will be charged.
. The theme of the show will
be western, in keeping with
the Centennial year. Prizes
will be given to the best stu
dent act and to the best adult
act,

ner, Engineer for the Oregon
insurance rating bureau, in
which Wagner states that the
new fire truck passed1 the
three-hour test which he con
ducted here recently.
A good deal more activity
has been noted in the area
recently. Real estate seems to
be more in demand, with a
number of sales having been
made. The sale of the Hughes
property on Elk creek to Mr.
and Mrs. Spencer and family
and the sale of building lots
to A. J. Yarnall were both
handled by Mrs. Ruth San
ford, Shady Cove broker.

Ashland have been visiting
during the spring school va

Buster Akins of Shady Cove.
Mrs. Akins and Mrs. Maguire

ly to visit with Leonard's
parents, Mr. and Mrs. Arnold
Winslew, in Shady Cove on
their way to Seattle, where
Leonard is to be married on
April 4.
Mr. T. J. Newton is visiting
with his cousins, Mr. and Mrs.
Glenn Collins of Shady Cove.
Mr. Newton is retiring from
the Navy and has been sta
tioned in the Philippines.
Mr. and Mrs.. Scott Brill of
Trail have just returned from
a trip to Mexico. The weather
was grand during their stay
there, they said, except for a
two hour blizzard one morn
ing, just a short distance from
Mexico City.
The Brill's took the low
road in and the high road out
but found the low road to be
more scenic to their way of
thinking. They took a lot of
-pictures while there. They
visited with their daughters
and families, Mr. and Mrs.
Robert Edminster of Merced,
Calif., and Mrs. George De

Mrs. Rufus Trusty of Elk

treatment of a head injury.
She is now considerably im
proved and is convalescing at
the home of Mr. and Mrs

Word was received Tuesday
from Mrs. Ernest Segessen
man in San Francisco that
her brother, John Roach, of
Eugene, who had undergone
major surgery in a hospital
in San Francisco a few days
previously, had passed away
She had gone down to San
Francisco to be with him dur
ing his illness. Mr. and Mrs
Segessenman have gone to
Eugene to attend funeral
services for Mr. Roach on
Saturday.
Mrs. Agnes Hubbell spent
the four days of Easter vaca
tion visiting at the home of
her son and family, Mr. and
Mrs. Grant Hubbell of San
Diego.
, Members of the 4-H Sew
ing club of Shady Cove have
decided to hold one Saturday
afternoon1 meeting per month
in addition to their regular
meeting. Work can be done
from 1 till 4 p.m. on their
projects and much more can
be accomplished in this way.
The regular monthly meet
ing of St. Martin's Guild will
be held Monday evening,

Installs Equipment
Pacific 'Telephone has just
completed the installation of
additional telephone switch
ing equipment in the Central
Point central office, according
to Manager J. H. Creager.
The installation makes it
possible to meet the continued
growth in the Central Point
exchange. The central office
served 1327 phones in April,
1955. There are now 1790
telephones in Central Point.
Western Electric installa
tion forces were engaged in
the six-week project of install
ing -the new switching equip
ment. There were from two
to four men in the central of
fice building for the past six
weeks, Creager said.
Installing the new switch
ing equipment cost the tele
phone company $18,000.

from a Medford doctor. He
went home last week end but
is coming back for a short
time to go to the doctor for
check-ups.

spent the past week end visit
ing with Mr. and Mrs. John
Sprague at the Rogue River
lodge. Other guests at the

young married women and we
are trying to save our dad
from making a terrible mis
take. Our mother died a year ago.
She and Pad had about the
happiest marriage I've ever
seen. I realize that those who
have been happily married
often make second marriages
after a spouse has died. My
sister and I have no complaints
on that score. We want Dad
to marry again.
However, Dad has chosen a
woman who is just awful. She
is loud and vulgar and de
manding. She'll never be sat
isfied with the living Dad
can provide. She is used to
furs and jewels and elegant
places. Dad must be blind not
to see these things. How can
he choose someone so different
from Mom?

Circuit Meeting
Completing three full days
of gaining new spiritual in
spiration and sharing their
faith and beliefs with others,
Jehovah's Witnesses conclud
ed their "Be a Teacher of the
Good News" circuit conven
tion Sunday. The final day
of the Bible seminar at the
Lassen county fairgrounds,
Susanville, Calif., reached its
peak attendance of 976.
This was the first conven
tion ever held in Susanville
by the Witnesses and it set a
new record in attendance and
activity for the organization
in this area, T. R. Thompson,
presiding minister of the lo
cal congregation, ' announced
today.
Keynote speaker was Eu
gene D. Rosam Jr., from
world headquarters, Brook
lyn, N.Y., who spoke on "A
Paradise Earth Through
God's Kingdom."
Saturday's sessions includ
ed the baptism of 21 new
ministers at the Roosevelt
Elementary school pool.
The closing session fea
tured Lloyd B Aldrich, cir
cuit minister, discussing "Ap
preciating Your Privileges at
the. World's End." Conven
tion chairman, Eugene D.
Rosam Jr., brought the three
day Bible conference to a
close with the talk, "A teach
er of Work Never to Be Du
plicated." Gibbons, the anthropoid
apes found in Malaya', rarely
exceed three feet in height.
Olio J.-My daughters are
giving me a real hard time.
They seem to think parents
are supposed to get an okay
from their children to make
a marriage. I haven't managed
to convince them that I'm old
enough (62) to make up my
own mind.
I think the girls have just
gotten a hate on this woman
because she hasn't shown
much interest in their family
doings. She has never had
children and has led an active
life, having earned most of
her money in her own busi
ness. She says that family life
bores her.
I am trying to get her a
little more interested in my
family, but frankly I enjoy
her different way of looking
at things. I have had a new
lease on life since I've been
going out with her.
The Council: These young
women are definitely out of
order in expressing these
strong negative reactions to a
woman their father likes. The
fact that they compare her
with their mother shows that
they are too emotionally in
volved to be able to give an
objective opinion.
This woman apparently has
much to offer that is novel
and intriguing to Otto. If her
"loudiness and vulgarity"
bothered him he would not
have gotten to the point cf
considering marriage. If the
woman felt that she could not
be satisfied with the living
Otto can provide, she would
not consider marrying him. A
woman devoted to "furs and
jewels and elegant places" to
the exclusion of everything
else would seek exactly these
things.
Apparently this woman has
some means of her own and
has now found, a male com
panion she likes. Undoubtedly
some of her resistance to "fam
ily doings" is connected with
a feeling of having been re
jected by these opinionated
daughters... Our " guess "if 'that
these young women gave her
a mighty cool reception. This,
in turn, put her on her mettle
and she was never able to re
veal herself simply and na
turally. Otto should not let his
daughters undermine his feel
ings. But he v should try to
make sure of his own attitudes
by seeing more of this woman
among people outside of the
family. If he is sure of him
helf , he should go ahead with
his plans. The daughters must
try to realize that real con
cern for their father will be
shown in respect for his
choice. If they learn to put
their Own feelings in the back
ground, they will undoubtedly
find that the woman he cares
for has much to recommend
her.

Three Men Killed During L.A. Robbery
Los Angeles-(UPD-Two sus
pected robbers and a police of
ficer were killed late Sunday
night in a blazing 15-minute
gun battle at a market.
About 40 policemen sur
rounded the market and took
part in the battle which raged
in the almost-darkened store
after Police Officer Charles
Bogardus was shot when he
entered the store earlier to
investigate a robbery call.
Police discharged a barrage
of shots to cover two ambu
lance drivers who braved pos
sible wounds to run in the
store and carry out the wound
ed officer who fell with a gun
shot wound in the head, ac
cording to radio newsman
Lloyd Perrin.
Bogardus was taken to Cen
tral Receiving hospital where
he died early today.
The slain gunmen were
identified as Howard Grant,
an ex-convict, and Nathaniel
Banks.
