75 German Measles Cases Are Reported
. Seventy-five cases of Ger
man measles were reported in
Jackson county last week, ac
cording to Dr. A. Erin Merkel,
public health physician. Of
the total, 52 cases were re
ported in Medford, 18 in Phoe
nix and 5 in Talent.

fluenza, 85 of them in Med-

Jacksonville and Applegate

Senator Speaks Up
On Korean Conflict
Washington - (UPD -Sen. Gor
don Allott (R-Colo.), believes
the Korean war would have
continued endlessly if the de
cision had been left to former
President Truman and Ex-Secretary
of State Dean Acheson.
Allott made the statement
Thursday in reply to Truman's
description of the Korean
settlement worked out under
President Eisenhower as a
U.S. "surrender." Allott call
ed Truman's remark irresponsible.
Essay Contest is
Announced by GOP
An essay contest on "Why
I Will Cast My First Vote for
the GOP" is being sponsored
by the Young Republican Fed
eration, it was announced to
day. Deadline for entries is
April 15, 1959, according to
Fred W: Heard, Young Repub
lican assistant chairman.
First place state prize is an
expense-paid trip to the Young
Republican National conven
tion in Denver, Colo., on June
17 to June 21.
The contest is open to all
American citizens between the
ages of 16 and 21, Herd said.
Entries must be limited to 300
words or less. Entries may be
sent to the Young Republican
Federation of Oregon, 3333

waukie, Ore. Essays will be
judged on clarity of thought,
originality and interest.
The prize - winning essay
will be chosen by the Oregon
Young Republican organiza

Ashland Boosters Plan Concert
India has the world's fourth
largest railway system.
Ashland - The Ashland
Chamber of Commerce and
the Ashland High school band
Boosters club have joined
forces to cosponsor a community-wide
Ashland High school
band benefit.
The event is planned to
raise sufficient funds to send
the band and a Shakespearean
float to represent the people
of Ashland in the junior rose
parade and the grand floral
parade at the rose festival

The band benefit, "an entire
evening of fun," is planned for
Saturday, April 18, in Church
ill hall auditorium, South
ern Oregon college. A pro
gram for adults, the melo
drama "He Ain't Done Right
by our Nell," will be presented
at 7:30 p.m. and again at 9:30
p.m.
The melodrama will be pre
ceded and followed by an olio
in the gay 90's theme by SOC
players.
Following the first perform
ance an old-time dance and
box social will be held in the
ballroom of the Britt center.
The 15-piece high school dance
band will provide music. Box
lunches will be auctioned at
11:30 p.m.
Tickets will be on sale early
