esu Erection of Jesus Christ To Be Celebrated on Ancient Schedule
Jerusalem, Israel- (LTD- Va
rious denominations will cele
brate the resurrection of Jesus
Christ three times by follow
ing an ancient schedule of
services in the beautiful
Church of the Holy Sepul
chre. On Sunday, Roman Catho
lics and Protestants will cele
brate the customary Easter
holiday of the Western world.
On Saturday, April 25, the
Jerusalem Baptist church will
conduct a joint Easter-Passover
celebration to commemo
rate the physical deliverance
of the Jews from bondage and
the spiritual deliverance of
humanity by the Passion of
Jesus.
Ancient Ceremony
On Sunday, May 3, the
Greek Orthodox Community
will rejoice in the rising of
the Savior with an ancient
ceremony of oriental splen
dor. The focal point to which all
hearts are drawn on Easter is
the church of the Holy Sepul
chre in the old city of Jerusa
lem. This, the most sacred
shrine in Christendom, houses
the tomb of Jesus.
Throughout the Catholic
world, Holy Week services are
held in the afternoon. The
Holy Sepulchre is the only
place of worship where the
Catholic services are held in
the morning. This is because
the Church of the Holy Sepul
chre is shared by Roman
Catholics, Greek Orthodox,
Armenian Orthodox, and, to
a lesser degree, Syrian and
Abyssinian Christians.
Times for the services of
each group have been care
fully fixed and rigidly ob
served by traditions genera
tions old. To upset this deli
cate balance jealously guard
ed by each would require ne
gotiations that would drag on
for years.
This Easter, services will
be held in a partly renovated
basilica which since the earth
quake of 1957 and the fire of
1949 has been in urgent need
of repair. The work, begun
last November, to restore and
stabilize the dome over the
main entrance of the Church
of the Holy Sepulchre will be
completed this summer.
The Roman Catholic Easter
Sunday will begin at 8:30 a.m.

RESCUE UNAVAILING Mud-covered rescuers John
Carter (left) and Ron Peters (right) were unable to pull
Neil Moss, 20-year-old Oxford student from a corkscrew
shaped fissure in a cave he had been exploring near
Castleton, England. Carter, a doctor, crawled through
the slimy blackness to aid Moss, but the boy died still
trapped. Peters was leader of rescue attempts.
