Fine Pennant Races Seen
For New Baseball Season

There'll be a pair of fine
pennant races after all this
year if the current Grapefruit
league . standings are ' for
real."
Everybody seems to be con
ceding the races to the New
York Yankees and the Mil
waukee Braves but both de
fending champions are under
.500 today while the Boston
Red Sox and Los Angeles
Dodgers are playing sensation
al ball.
The Red Sox defeated the
San Francisco Giants, 6-1, at
Scattsdale, Ariz., Tuesday to
raise their spring - record to
8-1. The Baltimore Orioles are
the only other American
league team over .500. The
Yankees have lost five of nine
games and the Chicago White
Sox, rated the AL's other chief
contender, are last with a 3-4
mark.
The Dodgers, idled by rain
Tuesday along with most of
the other teams training in
Florida, have a 5-2 record that
is by far the best in the na
tional league. The Braves
stand only 3-5 and the Pitts
burgh Pirates, who finished
second last season are 5-8.
Frank Sullivan, as likely an
opening-day pitcher as you'll
find from the Grand Canyon
to the Florida Keys, went six
fine innings Tuesday as the
Red Sox kept up their fast
spring pace. Sullivan yielded
four hits but struck out six
and Herb Moford, who held
the Giants hitless the rest of
the way, fanned four more.'
Ted Lepcio cracked the first
homer of the spring at Scotts
dale, thereby earning a col
lection of 1 6prizes from local
mercnants and pacing the
nine-hit Red Sox attack.

1,500 Athletes To Contend in Relay Encounter

On Sunday
Four teams will participate
in the Medford Elks lodge
spring trapshoot tournament.
The tournament, which
will run for six weeks, will
get underway next Sunday
when the annual pre-Easter
ham shoot is also scheduled
at Medford Gun club.
Traps will open around
9:30 a.m. for the Sunday ac
tivities. All scatter-gunners
interested may compete in the
ham shoot. Those entered
may shoot in their respective
classes and events are
planned for non-shooters.
The Elks' tourney here
will lead up to the Oregon
state convention of the lodge
at Klamath Falls. From the
local competition the top
shooters will be picked to
represent the Medford lodge
in the state shotgun tourna-:
ment.

ran second in this one to the
prophetically-named Dark
Star.
There have been some real
daisies among the names of
those who went postward in
the derby and failed miser
ably. How could they expect
them to run with such tags?
Like, say: Bankrupt, who did
just that to his backers; Cher
ry Pie, a juicy 20th; Dog
patch, who was: Frogtown,
should have been a jumper;
In Memoriam, whose tote
tickets ought to have been
edged in black; Vagabond, a
real bum; One Dime, what
he was worth, and Watermel
on, who was.
Other Poor Names
I don't know whether some
of these good-sounding colts
can run a lick, but this corner
has to go along with such un
inhibited colts this time as
Count Mighty, First Land
ing, Great One, Mighty Sir
and Navy King. As for Tomy
Lee, I don't think he's got a
Chimaman's chance. It's an
other case of "no tickee, no
laundry."
