Russia Said To Have What It
Takes To Wage Germ Warfare
Washington-(UPD-This coun
try is ripe for a biological
warfare (BW) Pearl Harbor.
Russia obviously has what
it takes to wage germ war
fare. It is possible that many
hours and even days might
elapse before the United
States even knew it had been
subjected to a sneak BW at
tack. The first intimation might
well be an influx to doctors'
offices and hospitals of pa
tients suffering from debili
tating or incapacitating mala
dies defying immediate diag
nosis. These conclusions stem from
lectures on BW given at the
Naval Medical Center Be-
thesda, Md., in connection
armed forces medical officers
on "the medical aspects of
special weapons."
No Advanc Warning
The lecturers, including
some of this country's fore
most authorities on germ war
fare, agreed that:
No advance warning of a
BW attack is currently likely.
All of the major nations are
striving to manufacture new
agents of infection which will
defy quick diagnosis, immun
ization, and , treatment with
antibiotic drugs.
BW provides the most ef
fective means of subduing an
enemy population without
killing it off or destroying
its economy.
The most effective way of
waging BW against a nation
is bymeans of clouds or aero
sols of vapor impregnated
with disease-bearing viruses,
bacteria, or spores. Aerosol
generators may be delivered
by any means - mines, sub
marines, planes, or missiles
weapon. The best BW is that which
incapacitates, rather' than
kills,' the. greatest number of
Jury Finds Man
Guilty of Charge
Robert Paul Bryant, 25, of
718 Gilman rd., was found
guilty by jury trial Wednes
day afternoon in circuit court
on a charge of attempting to
commit burglary.
The verdict was returned
at 3:30 p.m. following 1V&
hours of deliberation. The
trial started Tuesday with
Judge James M. Main presid
ing. Bryant was arraigned in

charge at which time he

persons in the shortest possi
ble time.
Aimed at Cities
BW against people, crops,
and farm animals might well
be decisive in a war in which
no other weapons were used
But it could be most effec-
tively used after a nuclear
attack which disrupted water,
feed, medical, and public
health systems, and through
radiation injury reduced a
population's resistance to disease.
Participants in the class on
BW were Dr. Leroy D. Foth-
ergill of the armed forces BW
lab at Fort Detrick, Frederick,
Md.; Cmdr. W. W, Taylor Jr.,
head of the biological and
chemical warfare branch of
the Navy's Bureau of Medi
cine and Surgery; Dr. Roger
C. Reid, director of the bio
logical sciences divisions of
the Office of Naval Research;
Cmdr. Robert W. Swanson,
commander of the naval unit
at Fort Detrick; and Dr. H
J. Carlson of the Office of
Naval Research.
The speakers emphasized
that;BW is a strategic weapon
against people and that an
enemy probabaly would aim
it at cities. U.S. experiments
have shown it is possible to
spread potentially deadly
clouds over thousands of
square miles from ships a few
miles offshore.

one-fourth of the American

its field workers four times

In the same way that sterling on silver signifies
a standard of known value, so is the A.B.C. em
blem a symbol of integrity for the circulation of
newspapers and periodicals. It means that circu
lation so identified is measured according to the
rules and standards pi the Audit Bureau of
Circulations
The A.B.C. is a cooperative and non-profit
association of 3,450 publishers, advertisers and
advertising agencies. Organized in 1914, these
buyers and sellers of advertising brought order
out of advertising chaos by setting
up standards for paid circulation
and establishing rules and methods
for measuring, auditing and report
ing circulations.
Therefore, the work of the A.B.C.,
of which this newspaper is proud to
be a member, provides you with a direct andT
valuable service. You can buy advertising as you
would make any other sound business investment
on the basis of well known standards, known
values.
At regular intervals one of the Bureau's large
staff of experienced circulation auditors makes a
thorough audit of our circulation records. The
results of this exacting audit show: How much
circulation we have; where our circulation goes;
how it was obtained; and many other facts that
you need in order to know just what
you get for your advertising dollars.
This audited information is pub
lished by the Bureau in easy-to-read
A.B.C. reports which are available
to our advertisers on request. Ask'
