. There are those fishermen
who have built up such a habit
of fishing through the win
ter they find it hard to quit
anytime. It could be that they
would rather fish than do
anything else. Anyway, there
were a few such hard-heads
out this last week end and
the busiest time was had by
those fishing the Klamath
river above Hornbrook.
LUCKY GUYS
The ones who were there
with the right answers lim
ited out with nice bright
fish running 20 lo 28 inches.
Limits were reported by
Wes Henderson and Jack
Thomas of Medford, with
lhe Okie drifter as the right
weapon and an assist from
night crawlers. The word is
that they are from a fresh
run and are very active if
the water gets low.
WHAT DID IT?
There are many people
wondering where and how
the poisons got into Bear
creek to the extent that many
fish are being killed. Some
people already know of sev
eral possibilities which have
existed for many years and
the present low water in the
creek makes these polluting
poisons very apparent now.
CAN BE OBSERVED
Every year the poison
spray tanks of some local
orchardists are observed be
ing cleaned out with Bear
creek water. There are
homes which run their sew
age directly into the creek.
Businesses along Bear
creek contribute to the pol
lution and can be observed
by anyone interested
enough to walk along the
creek within the city lim
its. There are meat process
ing plants along the creek
which run their untreated
wastes directly into lhe
stream.
PUBLIC OPINION ALLOWS
Until the people of the
valley realize that these things
continue to exist only be
cause public opinion allows
them to, nothing will be done
even though we have laws to
protect us from this type of
pollution. When public opin
ion raises a bigger stink than
the present one on Bear creek,
something more will be done
than just a filing of com
plaints. ARE THERE SAFEGUARDS?
A petition is being con
sidered by the local Cham
ber of Commerce which
will attempt lo change Sen
ale bill 183 back lo its
original wording and allow
, industrial use of water from
he main stem of the Rogue
river. The petition states
ihtt safeguards exist which
would make it impossible
for industry to pollute the
air or water of the Rogue
river valley. If this is so.
perhaps the chamber might
consider why pollution still
exists on Bear creek and
wonder how easily laws
against pollution are ig
nored. The pollution laws
which apply lo Bear creek
are the same laws which
would apply to lhe Rogue
river.
Senate bill 183 passed
the Senate with one dissent
ing vote and is in commit
tee before the House of
Representalives. This is the
revised bill which gives
lhe fish a right to water in
the Rogue river. The battle
is only half won.
HB 472 NEED SHOWN
House bill 472 is in the
legislative works. This bill
requests approval from the
fish and game commissions
for removal of sand or gravel
from Oregon streams. To show
the need for this bill, the day
after steelhead season was
over a power shovel was
working in the middle of the
Applegate river. Anyone ac
quainted with the damage
siltation does to eggs while
they are in the gravel can
see that it is this type of op
eration which must be con
trolled. CATFISHMEN WANTED
Ponds on lhe Game Com
mission property are loaded
with catfish and need some
hard work with a worm
covered hook. Some of the
ponds have bass and there
are bluegill available also.
These are species of warm
water game fish and re
quire a lot of fishing to
keep their numbers down.
If they are allowed lo over
produce beyond lhe avail
able food supply lhey be
come stunted and provide
poor fishing.
This fishing are is found
by driving out Crater Lake
highway to the Desert gas
station and turning left
onto Agate road. Gregory
road is the first road to the
left off Agate road and it
has seven ponds located off
to the right. They are easily
found by driving down
Gregory road to lhe Game
Commission buildings
where some of the ponds
can be seen.
BIG FISHING HOLE
A big catfish hole is the
big gravel pit just off to the
left of Agate road where it
crosses the MedCo railroad
tracks. The pit is about one
hundred yards from the road.
It has steep sides and is not
recommended for small chil
dren or anyone who cannot
swim. The water is eight to
ten feet deep and has a few
bass in with the catfish.
About two 1 miles further
down Agate road are six
ponds on military slough.
These are to the left of where
the slough crosses the road.
There are catfish in all the
ponds with bluegill in the low
est two.
ON NORTH SIDE
On the north side of the
river where the old river
channel cuts across the old
military road there are
bluegill and some of the
biggest bass in the county.
They run up lo four pounds
in weight and I would like
lo see someone caich the
granddaddy of lhe lot by
still fishing with a black
eel. This old river channel
crosses the road by the
-county gravel piles and con
tinues for a mile or so
down toward Touvelle park
where it cut back into the
present channel.
THE OPTIMIST'S CORNER
Even though we can't do
everything we want to about
existing pollution there are
still a few fish left in the
country. Those who haven't
given up might try the Klam
ath river above Hornbrook.
Try to hit when the water is
low. Maybe COPCO will give
you a schedule.

Wafsons Purchase
Bear Creek Mofel
Mr. and Mrs. Harry Wat
son, Medford, have purchased
the Bear Creek motel from
Mr. and Mrs. Jack Stewart,
Watson announced today.
Watson, who has been man
ager of the Medford hotel
since 1951, will terminate his
hotel position March 15, he
said. He has been in the hotel
business since 1928.
Watson said he plans only
to complete two unfinished
units at the motel at present.
The motel, which has been
operated by Mr. and Mrs.
Stewart for about 14 years,
is located south of Medford
on Highway 99.
Precaution Urged
In Bolivia Turmoil
La Paz, Bolivia -UPD- The
government and the U. S. Em
bassy have ordered special
precautions here today to pro
tect American lives and pro
perty against a possible new
outbreak of rioting.
President Hernan Siles said
the precautions were ordered
because the government con
sidered it possible that Time
Magazine's report this week
on the rioting touched off by
a previous Time article might
stir new disorders.
Time's current U. S. edi
tion refers to the Latin Ameri
can country as "landlocked,
geographically fractured, 68
per cent illiterate Bolivia."
It also reports that Siles
worked both sides of the
street in the disorders, first
ordering his supporters to
stage violent protests and then
rushing into the streets to
beg them to keep calm - an
injunction ignored by the
mobs. .
Tax on Utility
Companies Voted
Salem-fUPB-The House Tax
ation Committee Wednesday
night approved a bill which
would increase the tax on util
ity companies.
The measure would lower
the utility company corpora
tion excise tax rate from 7 to
6 per cent. But it would deny
use of the federal formula for
computing net income which
would have the effect of a tax
increase.
It is estimated the bill
would increase taxes on util
ity companies in Oregon by
about SI million a year.
Earlier, the Senate Taxa
tion Committee approved a
bill to tax utility company
property at a ratio 30 per cent
higher and homes 10 per cent
lower than other property.
