Sixty-three workers from
Oregon, Washington, and Cali
fornia were enrolled.

FORCED TO STAND

laughed when Walter Jones,
89, chose to stand while testi
fying against Roy Grander
son, an old friend he accused
of assaulting him. His old
friend shot him in the seat
of the pants with a small-bore
shotgun, Jones said. Grand
erson was fined for discharg
ing a firearm inside the city.

BURNED-UP FARMER A poultry farmer who has run
into so much trouble with the Government's price-support
program that he may move to Australia to get away
from it all, took his fight to the House agriculture sub
committee in Washington. Stanley Yankus, 40, of Dow
agiac, Mich., shows reporters a copy of "The Key to the
Constitution of the United States," as he waits to testify.
Yankus has been fined heavily for planting excess wheat
acreage, which he says he uses to feed his chickens. After
this picture was made, Yankus told Congress his only
crime was using his land to grow crops.

filte'rs used in sewage dispos
al. Trickling filters are beds
of stones or other packing
over which the sewage
"trickles" during the final dis
posal process. Microbial ac
tion helps oxidize the sewage
to make it less innocuous.
OSC's school of engineering
and department of bacteri
ology are conducting the re
search, which will provide
new and highly valuable in
formation on the merits of the
filters for secondary Jr final

is ready to be emptied into
streams and carried away.

vallis are cooperating in the
study. An experimental filter
has been constructed in con
junction with the Corvallis
sewage disposal plant.
Shallow Types
Most such filers now used
in sewage disposal across the
country . are shallow types,
ranging from 4 to 8 feet in
depth. The OSC test filter is
20 feet deep and 4 feet in di
ameter. The wooden "tower"
is packed with stones. Euro
pean filter depths commonly
run from 12 to 25 feet but
are used somewhat differ
ently. Purposes of the project are
to evaluate the engineering
aspects-effectiveness of depth,
recirculation of sewage, filter
capacity, etc. and the bio
chemical changes in sewage
produced by microorganisms
and plants that attach them
selves to the stones. ,
It is believed the trickling
filters will have special value
for use in areas where can
nery and other food plant
wastes upset the normal op
erations of sewage treatment
systems.
OSC is also studying pos
sibilities for using low-cost,
open-air waste oxidation la
goons for sewage disposal in
Western Oregon. The lagoons,
inexpensive to build and op
erate, are widely used in the
Midwest and Southwest by
small communities and indust
ries which are unable to af
ford sewage treatment plants.
Other larger communities are
using them to expand exist
ing facilities.
