Shady Cove-Trail - The re
port of the fire which oc
curred last Monday, March 2
at the Carl Scott home at
Trail, rented at the time by
the Glenn Albert family, was
in error as to the amount of
damage done to the house,
due to misleading informa
tion. After a recheck was made
it was found that the damage
was much less than reported
and the house will be repaired
by the insurance company.

commended on their prompt
action in bringing the fire un
der control.

a trip to Ukiah, Calif., where
they visited with their daugh

talk by Dr. Harold Rieth,

Dee Stockton returned
home last week from Green
land, where he has been
working for the past eight
months for the Greenland
contractors. While in Detroit
he purchased a new Chevro
let. Bill Boehlke, who spent
about two weeks visiting with
his sister, Mrs. Adeline Carl
in Shady Cove, has returned
to his home in De Winton,
Alberta, Canada.
While here he visited many
of - the mills and logging
camps in the area and watch
ed the operation of the vari
ous phases of longing, from
the woods to the mills. He
said he found the logging in
dustry quite interesting.

Texas Pilot Plans
Attempt at Record
Long Beach, Calif.- (UPD -A
Texas pilot planned to take
off at 3 p.m. (p..t.) today in
an attempt to set a non-stop
record in a single-engine
plane by flying a 7,100-mile
trip to Rome.
William Mullen, 35, Kerr
ville, Tex., hoped to break
the 6,856-mile record set last
August by Pat Boling who
flew non-stop from Pendle
ton, Ore., to Manila.
Mullen, the western region
al sales manager for Mooney
Aircraft of Texas, said he
would fly to Houston, Tex.,
and then set a course that
passes over Newfoundland to
Rome.
He will fly a Mooney Mark
20, a four-place craft which
will be jammed with gasoline
tanks to increase the plane's
fuel capacity to 400 gallons.

lis, 61, senior telegrapher for

died Sunday night. Szawlis
who underwent brain surgery
last week, had served with
United Press and United Press
International in Boston since
World War I.

Frank Duncan To
Defend Mother in
Trial for Murder
Ventura, Calif. -(UPD Frank
Duncan defends his mother,
Elizabeth Duncan, today
against charges she bargained
for the death of his wife two
months before the birth of
a grandchild.
S. Ward Sullivan, a noted
Los Angeles attorney repre
senting Mrs. Duncan, said
Duncan would be the only
witness, besides the 54-year-old
defendant, to testify for
the defense.
Maintains Innocence
Duncan, 30-year-old Santa
Barbara attorney, has main
tained his mother's innocence
in the 15-day trial, now mov
ing into the fourth week. He
faced cross examination by
Dist. Atty. Roy Gustafson.
Mrs. Duncan is accused of
hiring Luis Moya, 22, and
Augustine Baldonado, 25, last
November to murder her
daughter-in-law, Olga, a pret
ty 30-year-old Canadian-born
nurse.
Before the trial recessed for
the week end, Duncan testifi
fied he had hoped time and
the birth o f Olga's baby
would overcome his mother's
dislike of his wife.
"I love my mother and I
love her still, but I loved my
wife also," he testified. "
Telling about a period after
his marriage to Olga last
June 20 when he was sharing
apartments with both his
mother and his wife,-he said:
"To tell the truth, I was
going back and forth much
like a yo-yo, trying to keep
them both happy."
Duncan said he became an
gry when he found his moth
er had placed an advertise
ment in a Santa Barbara
newspaper proclaiming that
he would not be responsible
for his wife's debts.
"I told her it was my busi
ness alone," he said, "and for
her, his mother, not to inter
fere." The attorney said he con
fronted his mother after Bar
bara Reed, v a Santa Barbara
carhop, told him Mrs. Dun
can had asked her to help
kidnap Olga.
He said Mrs. Duncan .call
the story "preposterous" and
told him:

line delivered by Groucho
Marx who popped in at the
end. But sad to say, the show
contained only a few splashes
of fun.
Rooted in Reality
I suppose the reason for its
failure was that like most of
the Marx brothers later prod
uct, it was too firmly rooted
in reality or what sometimes
passes for reality. Real life
anchors the humor of lunacy.
It is a little like trying to set
Donald Duck down inside
"Bicycle Thief" - a move
doomed to failure because
Donald needs his own distort
ed cartoon world in which to
function.
Lunatic humor must set its
own rules inside its own
made-up world. In a world of
illusion we cau accept Harpo
with a watermelon in his
pocket or Groucho as a dicta
tor of a whole country. How
ever creating an illusion
world is a pretty exacting
task-and TV half hour shows
like G.E. Theater, have not
distinguished themselves in
the past either for their ex
acting pains or creativity.
Short Shots: CBS-TV's The
Last Word suffers as a show
when it books in personali
ties such as Betty Comden,
Celeste Holm or Sunday's
Cornelia Otis Skinner. The
show was most interesting in
its opening days when it was
offering guests with some
thing to say like Robert
Graves and David Daiches.
Arthur Godfrey will do his
shows from Hawaii March 30
through April 10 - the pro
grams will be videotaped and
flown to the mainland.

Fisherman Drowns
As Boat Overturns
Oceanlake- (UPD - One man
was feared drowned and an
other saved himself Saturday
after their 12-foot fishing
boat overturned near the
mouth of the Salmon river
about 10 miles north of here.
A search for Ear! Crowley,
67, of Rose Lodge, was
launched by the Coast Guarcr.
Crowley's companion, Jack
Roberts, 52, also of Rose
Lodge, said when the boat
capsized both swam to some
rocks near the shore but just
as they were pulling them
selves to safety Crowley said
"I can't make it," and was
washed away by a large
wave.
