According to Carolyn Jones, who costars with
Frank in his latest film, his concern for people is
equally evident at parties. "I attended a dinner with
Frank. There were a lot of good-looking young girls,
yet he was most attentive to an old lady who could
have been his grandmother. How she beamed!"
Maybe Frank did see something of a grandmother
in the old lady; his own grandmother virtually raised
him and, with another elderly Hoboken woman, of
fered him most of the affection in his youth.
What Frank's co-workers said of him jibed pretty
much with what I knew from a few meetings with
him. I recall attending a benefit for blind children at
which Frank sang. Between songs, he made a point of

He stars
saying hello to a mutual friend of ours, a secretary
of no importance to him, while scores of studio exec
utives sat awaiting a wave from him. Frank and I had
had lunches together, too, at which he talked freely
and charmingly. His only request: "Don't ask me
anything about my private life that you wouldn't
want asked about your own."
If he's suspicious of newspapermen, I suppose he
has reason. I heard of one New York columnist who
enjoyed the hospitality of Frank's home for weeks
while promising to observe the "private life" rule:
he ended up writing a scathing attack on his host.
And a few hours after interviewing Sinatra, I met a
Hollywood cohort who also promised Frankie to stick
to business questions.
"Won't that make a dull story?" I asked.
He winked. "What I ask Frankie-boy and what I
write are two different things."
Frank is natural copy. No rule he makes can change
that fact. And for somebody looking for a fresh angle
a screaming headline all he has to do is prod
the irascible actor like a picador in the bull ring. He'll
get a punch or a cussing out and go back to his type
writer happy with a sensational story.
But looking at Frank, beset and embittered, you
get the feeling that it's not worth it. For all his
triumphs and his millions, he's got enough troubles
of his own making without your adding to them.
So you say, "Good-bye, Mr. Sinatra; thanks for the
interview," and exit gently.
