Comeback
Start Good
By LARRY SHAW
Portland (UPD Eddie Ma
chen has started a comeback,
successfully.
Machen Thursday . night
took a methodical ring vic
tory over Young Jack John
son of Los Angeles. The ver
dict was unanimous.
The fight was his first since
being knocked out by Inge
mar Johansson last year in
Sweden. At that time, Ma
chen was the number one
contender for the heavy
weight crown. Since then he
has slipped to number six in
the rankings.
Kneeing Apparent
Most of the action was re
served for the last two
rounds. In the ninth Johnson,
218, Los Angeles, triggered
Machen's temper by apparent
ly kneeing him in the groin
three times. It also aroused
the partisan Machen crowd
Until then, it had been a
fairly mediocre fight, with
neither man hurting the
other.
But in the ninth, after the
kneeing episodes, Machen
tried for the big punch. He
failed, but the last two rounds
were by far the best of the
fight. Machen won both by
wide margins.
Ashlander Stopped
In the dressing room after
the fight, Machen collapsed
but was brought around
quickly and complained of
being tired. He apparently
was not hurt at anytime dur
ing the fight.
Referee Ralph Gruman
scored the fight 100-91, Judge
George Robinson had it 99-95
and Judge Eddie Volk 99-94,
all for. Machen.
The crowd was announced
as 2,613 and paid a gross of
$7,313 to see the fight.
Preliminary results:
Cal Brown, Spokane,
knocked out Lee Bounds,
Ashland, in the first round;
Roger Rouse, Opportunity,
Mont., KO'd James Jackson,
Fresno, Calif., in one; Jimmy
Walker, Portland, decisioned
Mickey Gilmer, Seattle, and
Chinco Chavez, Portland,
and Bob Milne, Seattle, drew
in 4.

United Press International
Russ Meyer and Ransom
Jackson, who were big league
stars away back when the
Dodgers played in Brooklyn,
are making strong early bids
to start new careers with
American league teams.
Meyer, the former "mad
monk of Flatbush," is trying
to win a place on the Kansas
City Athletics' pitching staff
while Jackson, once valued by
the Dodgers at $100,000, is
battling for a third base job
with the Cleveland Indians.
The 35-year-old Meyer im
pressed Manager Harry Craft
Thursday when he pitched
three hitless innings during
Kansas City's final intra-squad
game of the spring. Meyer
said afterward that has arm
trouble has completely disap
peared and added, "I feel I
can stick with the Athletics
this year."
Jackson, a 33-year-old na
tive of Little Rock, Ork., hit
two homers and drove in eight
runs during the Indians' three
game intrasquad series which
was concluded Thursday. A
poll of newsmen covering the
Indians' camp made him the
series' most valuable player.
Shortstop Billy Moran hom
ered for the big blow of
Thursday's game.
