Bill Would Curb
Rodeo Activity
Salem-UPD-Rodeos in Ore
gon would be handicapped if
a bill introduced Wednesday
by Sen. Jean Lewis (D-Port-land)
at the request of the Ore
gon Humane Society becomes
law.
The bill provides that any
person "who engages in a con
test in which cattle or other
animals are roped as a test of
skill for any money, prize,
title or championship, shall
be fined not less than $100
or more than $500.
The bill states that nothing
in the section above shall pre
vent a person "from engag
ing in a contest in which
calves or goats are roped as
a test of skill, as long as he
does not throw or drag a
roped animal while the rider
is on a horse."
"Such a bill would destroy
the Pendleton Round-Up and
every rodeo throughout the
state," Sen. Anthony Yturri
(R-Ontario) said.
Portland - (DPD - City Com
missioner Mark-Grayson said
that he believed about 400,
000 acres of Portland's Bull
Run watershed could be open
ed to recreation without dan
ger to the city's water supply.

Mrs. M. F-There's no moral
law against fun.
Lydia D. I am all upset
about my mother, a 70-year-old
widow who seems to have
suddenly gone off her track,
or should I say on the track?
Mother has always been a
strait-laced, religious woman.
Recently she met a man her
own age, who has spent most
of his life gambling and bet
ting on the horses. For some
reason he and Mother took a
liking to one another and they
go off to watch the races near
ly every day. Mother has been

betting and claims she has
been winning so far, but
what'll happen - when she
doesn't win? Her income is
very small.
Mostly I'm concerned about
everyone knowing all about
this. It's terribly embarrassing
to me when I see my friends
watching her go off with this
man. She should at least have
consideration for me and my
children.
Mrs. M. F. - In the three
months I've been at this, I've
made quite a bit of money.
Maybe I've had beginner's
luck, but my boy friend says
I'm really terrific, and I've
no system - just intuition. I've
always had a lot of intuition,
been strait-laced and religious
-well, maybe I was a little
too strait-laced. Anyway I'm
still religious. I can't see what
that has to do with it. There's
no moral law against fun. '
I don't really care what my
daughter and her nosy,
gossipy friends say about me,
but it does make me mad
when my daughter is rude to
my boy friend. When he calls
for me, she leaves him stand
ing in the middle of the living
room with his coat on. She
doesn't even ask him to sit
down.
The Council: This looks to
us like a clear - cut case of
jealousy. We can't see any
other reason why young
women can't find anything
better to do than observe and
condemn the conduct of a 70-
year-old woman.
Carefree, . admired, stimu
lated by success, Mrs. M. F.
goes off every day to enjoy
herself, leaving behind a lot
of bored shallow, cantanker
ous females. Probably Lydia
and her friends are disgusted
by the narrowness of their
own horizons and project their
resentment on the only female
they happen to know who is
not like them.
The fact that Lydia has no
recognition of her own go'od
fortune in having an elderly
mother who is healthy, happy,
resourceful and independent
indicates that she does not
allow the smallest beam of
common sense to enter the
small, dark chamber of her
mind. Because of this, her
sour disposition will undoubt
edly gain fuller and fuller
sway over her as time goes on.
We hate to imagine her at 70.
Mrs. M.F. should realize,
however, that her present
gambling ' success cannot go
on indefinitely. Lydia is right
to caution her on that score.
In the long run the gambler
an't TrceiVlw win tiro
would suggest that Mrs. M.F. :
set herself a very small allow- j
ance from her small income
for the purpose of having an
afternoon of fun - not for the
purpose of making extra
money.
