Donor Carl Bjordahi this
month presented the Jackson
County library with a much
needed additional copy of
Pasternak's popular "Doctor
Zhivago," which will help the
library fill its many requests
for the title more quickly. .
Other useful books donated

Thompson, Mrs. E. Reznicsek,
and Mrs. William Fluhrer
added 73 gifts to the 221 vol
umes purchased for the li
brary during February. The
total number of volumes add

What Is
The Law?

the outcome.
Partnership by Estoppel
Smith and Johnson, men of
moderate means, form a part
nership to engage in the
clothing business. After-some
years of operation, they hire
Brown, a young man with a
sizeable estate of his own.
Brown, in going about as con
fidential clerk of the firm,
contrives to give many peo
ple the impression, either by
direct statements, or by veil
ed hints, that he is a partner
in the business.
Allen, a clothing manufac
turer, believing that Brown
is a partner, on the strength
of his credit sells the firm a
large order of goods. Before
this bill is paid, the partner
ship assets are exhausted.
Brown is liable, jointly with
Smith and Johnson, for the
whole debt, just as though he
were a partner. In legal term-
ology, Brown is 'estopped'
from denying to' Allen that
he is a partner because he
had previously given the op
posite impression.
Moreover . . if Brown does
not himself represent that he
is a partner, but allows
Smith or Johnson to intro
duce him to a customer as
"Mr. Brown of our firm" or
"my partner, Mr. Brown" he
will make himself responsi
ble to the customer as a part
ner. If Brown has stood by
and allowed , himself to be
represented as a partner
without protest, the effect is
the same as if he had made
the representation himself.
A more frequent case is
where a partner retires from
his firm without giving no
tice of his withdrawal to the
partnership s customers or
clients. Persons selling goods
or rendering services to the
firm think he is still a mem
ber, and, subsequently, when
the firm fails, he finds that
he is liable to these persons
as if he had remained a part
ner.
The courts reason that it is
fair that a man who allows
others to think that he is a
member of a firm, should be
held responsible to persons
giving the firm credit on the
faith of this supposition, and
that he should be liable to
the same extent as if he were
actually a partner. This is
called "partnership of estop
pel."

Secretary James P. Mitchell
said today cheap foreign la
bor was pulling down wages
and forcing U. S. farm work
ers to live in conditions that
were "an affront to the con
science of the American peo
ple." Mitchell reiterated his pro
mise to draft legislation set
tling minimum wages and
hours for U. S. farm workers
and regulating imported for
eign help. He said the Labor
Department was studying the
matters.
