Chief Counsel Robert F.
Kennedy said the inquiry
would center on some of the
top figures in the storied Chi
cago underworld. He said
these would include Sam
(Mooney) Giancanna, reputed
to be the latest successor to
"the gangdom throne of Al
Capone.
Kennedy said witnesses
would relate threats by mob
sters to outfit juke box op
erators with "cement boots"
and drop them in the river.
He said the testimony also
would touch on often-heard
' rumors that underworld fig
ures have helped the careers
of their favorite singers with
enforced sales of their rec
ords. More Violence Involved
Kennedy said the Chicago
style of juke box rackeeter
ing involved even more vio
lence than that exposed dur
ing the New York hearings,
which closed Wednesday.
He said it also included
the now-familiar triangle or
collusion among mobsters, un
ion officials and leaders of
juke box trade associations.
The lead-off witnesses will
be a group of operators, in
cluding Don Maloney, Max
Brier, Robert E. Lindeloff,
Nicholas Galetano and Ber
nard Poss.
Kennedy said they would
tell about efforts of Chicago
gangsters to take over the
juke box operations in out
lying areas.
Doctors Keep Eye i
On Condition of
General Marshall

doctors held hopes today that
the condition of General of
the Army George C. Mar
shall was "stabilizing."
The 78-year-old retired sol
dier statesman, hospitalized
here since Jan. 15, suffered
second stroke earlier this
week and was reported in
erious condition.
A medical bulletin late
Wednesday said Marshall's
condition "seems to be sta
bilizing" but Col. George
Powell said his prognosis
was "guarded."
Powell, chief of medicine
at the Army's new Womack
General Hospital here, told
newsmen, "I hope the gener
al's condition reverses itself
instead of getting worse. If
it stabilizes, chances of re
covery are fairly good."
Chance of Another Stroke
He noted, however, that
the fact that Marshall already
has suffered two strokes
makes the chances of another
one greater.
. Powell also reported that
a "very mild pneumonia"
had developed, practically
concurrently with the second
stroke which came sometime
between late Monday ' and
early Wednesday. He stress
ed, however, that "right now
the pneumonia is not" com
plicating the general's, illness.
The Wednesday bulletins
said that, as was the case
with the first stroke last
month, there was no paralysis
but that Marshall was experi
, encing some difficulty in
swallowing and in seeing in
certain directions.
