bers to up their total to 31.
They knotted for, the lead
with Ranny Smith and Tom
Teutsch who did not play last
week.
Clayton Lewis and Frank
Allen remained ' in third
place with 24 points although
they had no match. The fourth
spot duo, Paul Meyers and
Dick Hogan dropped two
points to Dr. Ralph Odell and
John Nuich.
Qualifying play for the
spring handicap tournament
must be completed by March
1 after which entries will be
paired for matches.

Bob Mclntire sparked the

in 25 tries.
McLoughlin players missed
lay-ins when they were trail
ing just 38 to 39 and 40 to 41
in the late minutes of the
game.
The GP club had quarter
leads of 12 to 6, 23 to 20 and

do their best," a spokesman

Therefore, Aragon is to
receive only $6,000, instead
of the $8,000 for which he

with three seconds left for
the winning points.

Talent Paces First Half
Talent took its first half;
command with a steadier
game. . It hit well from the
outside and had rebound con
trol. The Bulldogs beat the
Crusaders in the battle for
loose balls in the first two
quarters. St. , Mary's, : which
forced its shots in the first
half, moved the ball better
over the rest of the way and
got better chances. The Med
ford crew improved its re
bounding and other fighting
for the ball and tightened its
defense.
St. Mary's lost Dick Evans
on fouls in the third quarter
and Mike Jacobs and Eddie
Seaver were sidelined for the
same reason in the fourth.

from Eagle Point High will
attend Linfield college at Mc
Minnville Feb. 18 through 22,
where a speech conference is
being held. The students in
clude Suzi Chubb, Georgia
Weidman, Susie " Palm, Joey
and Jackie Hume, Rolf Gus
land, Debbie Dunlap, Carol
Scott, Aedene Jensen and
Lana McGraw.
They will compete in de
bate, interpretation,, oration,
visual aids, salesmanship,
after dinner speaking, radio
script, and interview.
The Eagle Point FFA chap
ter is seeking two prairie
schooner wagons for the Ore
gon Centennial celebration.
The wagons will be used by
the 4-H students who will
travel from Medford to Cor
vallis for the summer school"
session in June;
The EP chapter also has
participated in a few con
tests. In the district leader
ship contest in Phoenix re
cently, Bill Hubbard, senior,
placed fourth. Bill's speech,
entitled "Unity, the Key to
Agricultural Prosperity," was
given in the public speaking
contest. '
The parliamentary proced
ure team placed fifth. Other
schools of the Rogue and
Umpqua valleys participated.
Feb. 7 a group of Eagle
Point FFA boys went to
Marshfield to a skills contest.
Steve Carroll placed first in
the "secretary book" and
second in seed identification.
John Cox placed third in seed
identification. Victor Halsey
placed second in hog calling,
and Bill Morgan placed sec
ond in the first year project
book.
The third adult farmer
class, sponsored by the Eagle
Point vocational Agriculture
class was started Jan. 8 on
livestock feeding. Attending
the class from the area are
35 farmers. It is instructed
by Keith Hockersmith, sales
man from the Grange Co-op
of Central Point.
"Pioneers of the Future"
was selected by the seniors
as the motto for the gradu
ating class of 1959 in a recent
election.
Because 1959 is the centen
nial of Oregon, students car
ried the spirit of the year
over into the selection of their
class flower, the Centennial
Rose, the state's official cen
tennial flower. For sharp con
trast with the scarlet red of
the roses, white carnations
were chosen. So red and white
was decided upon for the class
colors.

and Sharon, were the feature

sophomore class Feb. 7. The
girls sang several songs, one
of which was written by
Carol, who is a junior at
Eagle Point. Sharon, a seventh
grader, attends grade school
at Shady Cove.
The Smith family recently
moved to Shady Cove from
Sacramento, Calif.
The second annual "Pops
Concert" was presented by
the high school band under
the direction of Charles Mar
tin, band instructor, Sunday
afternoon, Feb. 15.
. The concert featured selec
tions from the "Music Man"
by Meredith Wilson and three
band sketches by Marrissey.
Several popular songs were
played, including "Patricia,"
"Tom Dooley," "Teddy Bear's
Picnic," and "White Silver
Sands."
Fred Jossy and Frances
Huffman were featured with
solos. Fred played the trum
pet 'and Frances the baritone
saxaphone. . .
The event was held in the
grade school gym which was
decorated with log fences,
trees, and scenery to carry
out 'the Centennial theme.
Punch and cookies were
served throughout the con
cert. -
Bill Hubbard, Eagle Point
senior, was elected for the
office of county judge in the
11th annual Student Govern
ment Day election held here
Jan. 27. One of the duties con
nected with this office was to
give an after dinner speech at
the Elk's lodge Feb. 4.
Other elective offices se
cured by the Eagle Point jun
iors and seniors included the
juvenile officer, held by Jean
Messecar; sheriff, . Art Gard
ener; deputy records clerk,
Pat Clave; and county en
gineer, (Duane Anderson.
Appointive offices were
held by Jaye MacDermot as
audio visual aid director;
water master, Steve Carroll;
public health nurse, Molly
Gregg; and agricultural agent,
Jack Esp.
The original purpose of the
program was to give seniors
an apportunity to see local
government in action.
Students were chosen for
various offices by students in
elections that are similar to
those held for actual govern
mental officials.
The program is sponsored
annually by the Elks club.
Kerek Jarto, violinist, pre
sented a program of classical
music at a National School
assembly Monday, Feb. 16.
Jarto was accompanied on
the piano by a traveling com
panion, Mr. Kennedy. Both
have been in motion pictures,
traveled around the world,
and given many perform-
