Planners
Approval
Variance
The Medford planning com
mission last night recommend
ed approval for a setback vari
ance request from A. G. An
derson, 401 Park st., to allow
erection of an open carport
on the lot at that address.
The recommendation fol
lowed a public hearing. Allan
Perry, vice president of the
commission, stated he thought
it should be a general policy
in the future not to allow such
variances unless a case of ex
treme hardship is involved.
He said he' realized the city
zoning ordinance permits the
granting of variances in ex
treme cases, but he believed
too liberal a policy would
hinder the effectiveness of the
ordinance.
Zona Change Request
Also recommended for ap
proval was the request for
a change of zone from single
family to light industrial for
the property bounded by
North Riverside ave., Court
st. and Ohio st.
The planners approved a re
quest for the vacation of
Mingus st. This matter must
be given a public hearing
before the city council. City
Manager Robert A. Duff point
ed out that Mingus, while
dedicated, has never been
used , for utilities or other
wise improved. It is south
west of the intersection of
Summit ave. and MeAndrews
rd.
The commission continued
to its March meeting a public
hearing on the proposed mu
nicipal subdivision ordinance.
Three other hearings also
were continued. These include
zone change requests for the
Luther and Ann Davis prop
erty on Barnett rd. near the
proposed freeway inter
change, the Eagles' property
on Biddle rd., and the E. W,
Brown property on Crater
Lake ave. east of the Jackson
st. shopping center.
Continue Consideration
The planners continued con
sideration of a request to va
cate an alley in the Riverside
subdivision north of Man-
zanita st.'
A request for vacation of
an alley north of O'Gara ave
between South Holly and
South Grape sts. was turned
down, on grounds' it may pro
vide an access for a proposed
couplet and serve abutting
commercial lots.
The requests of William
Aulick and Carl Wilke for an
nexation to the city of prop
erty southeast of the Stewart
ave. - Peach st. intersection
were denied. Aulick said the
requests were made in hope
of obtaining city sewer ser
vice.
He said sanitation condi
tions in that area are poor,
and some people are letting
their private sewers run into
the ditch that borders Stewart
ave.
Create Other Problems
Perry stated that annexa
tion of property south of
Stewart ave. would create
'other problems," especially
with respect to the present
city-county arrangement for
maintenance of streets such
as Stewart running along the
city limits
Public hearings were called
for the next regular meeting
on two zone change requests.
The first is for a change from
multiple family to commercial
