Metropolitan Jazz Quartet; now, via MGM,
this group has five new albums on the
market to showcase their talents. Each
package is devoted to a famous theme,
such as the classics, great Broadway shows,
foreign movies, American movies, and TV
shows. Also of interest are two Warner
Brothers items, "N.Y. Export: Jazz from
Ballets U.S.A." by Robert Prince, and
"Funky Piano, New Orleans Style" by
Alton Purnell.
"Something Else!" is a real gasser by
Ornette Coleman, a most talented musi
cian cutting for Contemporary. "Fabu
lous Phineas" could only be Phineas New
born and his trio on RCA, while "Lover
Man" is Decca's showcase for Billie Holi
day. "Duke Ellington at the Cotton Club"
is Camden's $1.98 bargain package.

Let's start off with the vocalists, who have
some good platters this month. Disney
land offers "Mary Martin Sings a Musical
Love Story"; from RCA comes "Smoochin'
Time" by the Ames Brothers, and "Lou
Monte Sings," an especially good waxing
for the whole family; "Sing a Song of
Italy" by Toni Arden, and "The Swinging
Aces" featuring the Four Aces are Decca's
entries; Capitol brings us "Things Are
Swinging" by pretty Peggy Lee and "The
Very .Thought of You" by Nat "King"
Cole. Finally, from MGM, try "I Love
You" by Joni James, "It's All in the Game"
starring Tommy Edwards, and "Hello,
Tiger" by a new singer, Sallie Blair.

For the kiddies, Disney pre
sents "This Was the West" by
Stan Jones and "Sleeping
Beauty," told and sung by Mary
Martin. Hi-fi fans will want
"Mallet Mischief" by Harry
