Farm Bureau Man To Speak in Area
Donald E. Hirsch, assistant
director of the commodity di
vision of the American Farm
Bureau Federation, will dis
cuss the dairy marketing situ
ation at a meeting at the Red
wood Grange hall, south of
Grants Pass, Feb. 11.
The meeting is one of sev
eral being arranged by the
Oregon Farm Bureau, and rep
resentatives of the dairy in
dustry in Jackson, Josephine
and Douglas counties are in
vited. The meeting will start at
10 ajn. and end at 3 p.m. Pot
luck lunch will be served at
noon with the dairy organiza
tions and Farm Bureau pro
viding the main dish and
dairy products.
Hirsch's discussion will in
clude national legislation pro
posed concerning the dairy in
dustry and a five-point pro
gram supported by the Farm
Bureau Federation.
The five-point program in
cludes increased consumption
of dairy products, balance pro
duction and consumption of
dairy products, increase mar
keting efficiency, increase pro-
auction efficiency, and in
crease the dairyman's bargain
ing power.

checking clues to the killing
of a peahen in Lithia park
zoo sometime Thursday night.
Police said the gate to the
pen apparently had been kick
ed down, and scuff marks
were found within the en
closure. A quantity of feath
ers were lying around the
cage. '
Officers believed the bird
was kicked to death when
cornered. They could offer
no reason why the bird would
be attacked and killed.

Next Wednesday Feb. 11
marks the beginning of one of
the least-understood seasons
of the Christian year.
It is called Lent, a name
derived from an old Anglo
Saxton word for springtime.
It is easy to say who ob
serves Lent, and when, and
how. The question that causes
confusion, even in churches
that place great emphasis on
Lent, is why.
To take up the easy ones
first, Lent is observed by all
liturgical churches, including
the Roman Catholic, Luther
an, Episcopal and Eastern Or
thodox communions. These
churches follow an ancient
calendar of worship which di
vides the year into six great
seasons - Advent, Christmas,
Epiphany, Lent, Easter and
Trinity. The idea is that this
calendar provides an annual
rhythm for worship, so that
each major aspect of the
Christian faith has its own ap
pointed season for special
emphasis.

Many Protestant bodies
which formerly ignored the
liturgical calendar have, be
gun in recent years to see val
ues in it. One result of this
so-called liturgical revival is
that Lent is now being ob
served in a number of Pres
byterian, Methodist and oth
er Protestant churches.
The date of Lent varies
from year to year, because it
is tied to the date of Easter.
Specifically, Lent is a period
of 40 weekdays and six Sun
days preceding Easter. This
period was fixed by Pope Fe
lix II in 487 A.D., but his de
cree merely formalized a cus
tom that was widespread in
the Christian church as early
as 200 A.D.
The Eastern Orthodox
churches reckon the date of
Easter by a method different
from that used in Western
churches. Hence their ob
servance of Lent begins on a
different date (March 16) this
year. x
Fast Rules Vary
Roman Catholics are en
joined to fast on all week
days during Lent by foregoing
meat at two of the three
meals. In Eastern Orthodox
churches, rules . for fasting
vary from one archdiocese to
another. In some cases they
prohibit meat or fish at any
of the three meals, but those
who are not physically able
to stand this regime may con
fine their fasting to the first
and last weeks of Lent.
Episcopal 'and Lutheran
churches leave it up to the in
dividual's conscience to de
termine how he will observe
Lent. But both encourage sys
tematic act of self-denial. As
the Episcopal book of common
prayer puts it, each person
should practice "such a mea
sure of abstinence" from food
or 1 other worldly pleasures
as he finds necessary to disci
pline his appetites and "bring
the body into subjection" to
the spirit.
In addition to fasting, Lent
is observed with "extraordi
nary acts of devotion." For
Catholics, this may mean
more frequent attendance at
mass. For Protestants, it is
likely to mean Wednesday
night worship services, pray
er groups, and devotional
reading.

What is the purpose of:
Lent? In all of the Lenten
literature that has been writ-i
ten by Catholic and Protestant i
scholars, two themes stand '
out:
1. Lent is an annual re-:
minder to Christians that
Jesus did not promise his fol
lowers ease, comfort or suc
cess in this life. On the con
trary, he said that "if any man
will come after me, let him
deny himself, and take up his
cross, and follow me." Many
theologians feel that Lent's
emphasis on sacrifice and self
denial is especially needed by
modern Christians, who live
in a world that places su
preme importance on the pur
suit of happiness.
2. As a "penitential sea
son," Lent stresses the Chris
tian teaching that all men are
sinners and in need of God's
mercy. This doctrine is almost
as uncongenial to the modern
mind as the ideal of self-denial.
But the liturgical church
es believe that no man can
really comprehend the joy of
Easter, with its message of re
demption, until he has faced
the fact of his own sinfulness.
