in the Illinois Medical Journ
al on the recent discovery
that a Chica

was really a
patient from a
mental hospi-

edge of medi
cine. For some
time he h a d
vj-3 been practic-

and pleasing many of his pa
tients, excepting, of course,
those who happened to die
under his ministrations! Ap
parently, no one asked him
for any credentials, or looked
to see if in. his office he had
a license to practice. But,
even if he had had some di
plomas, this might not have
shown that he was a doctor
because a would-be quack
sometimes buys from the wid
ow of a doctor her husband's
diplomas, and then he as
sumes the doctor's name.
People aske me why did
n't the medical .association
expose the supposed doctor
and have him put out of busi
ness. One reason is that in
Illinois and most other states
the detection of fake doctors
and the putting of them out
of business is the function of
the Department of Registra
tion and Education. No medi
cal society can do it.
It should be noted, also,
that in Illinois the penalty
for practicing without a lic
ense or any knowledge of
medicine is so small that no
quack need worry about it.

back to work. For the last
two years the attorney for the
Illinois State Medical Society
has been trying to get a law
