Total landings were 186,000,-
000 pounds less than the year

State Suspends
Licenses of 518
Salem The department of
motor vehicles has released
names of 518 drivers whose
licenses were ordered sus
pended during the period be
ginning Jan. 26, and ending
Jan. 30.
Length of suspension varies,
depending on charges in
volved, recommendation of
court, discretionary action by
the department or require
ments of Oregon law. The de
partment said some of the
licenses involving financial
responsibility and court rec
ommendations may have been
re-instated after suspension
was ordered.
The department warned
drivers that the penalty for
driving while suspended is a
jail sentence of no less than
two days and up to six months,
and there may be imposed a
fine up to $500. Under licens
ing procedures, this will also
result in an additional year
of suspension.

A. & P. in 1949 ran a series
of advertisements telling its
story. The company, along
with the anti-trust division
and Congressmen were flood
ed with letters of protests
from housewives all over the
nation.
Hundreds of farm organiza
tions joined the protest. So
did labor unions and business
groups. Even some of A. &
P.'s competitors took a hand
at letter writing in favor of
the company.
In fact, so many articulate
voters shouted so loudly that
the Justice Department was
glad to drop the case like a
hot potato. And A. & P. is
still in business with its stock
listed on the big board.
What could little stockhold
ers do against the big Justice
Department? They could shout
but they lack leadership and
they don't get the attention
from government agencies
that is given housewives,
unions, and farmers. When
these squeak, there's grease
coming very" quickly for the
wheel.
However, here's a potential
group that might be brought
together under the proper
leadership. There now are
some 10 million stockholders
throughout the nation. They
are little and big-more little
than big. They are in every
city from coast to coast and
every hamlet boasts a few.
These stockholders are high-
class citizens, frugal, saving
for the future and trying to
protect their dollars. They
could be whipped up into a
powerful group for good, but
so far. attempts to organize
them haven't amounted to
much.
There are several individ
uals and some organizations
that speak for certain groups
of stockholders, but none rep
resents all of them. They have
no grange, they have no union,
they have no chamber of com
merce of their own. And for
the most part the little stock
holder isn't articulate. He
takes a lot and says nothing.
Incidentally, Wall Street is
divided on the ultimate results
of Department of Justice
forays into the realm of big
business. It doesn't like the
activities in Washington, but
it isn't sure that in the end
they'll have a real influence
on the stock market.
The market in the past has
weathered such storms. It got
over the big trust busting of
the early 1900s. It lived
through many an anti-trust
case and at times thrived as
the hearings were building
up millions of words.

Justice Department sought to
single out say General Motors
for a break-up, the operation
would drag on for years and
years.
Meantime, the climate
doesn't seem to be very good
for mergers of any kind. And
if a company is big, the stock
holder can safely bet it at
least will get a mention
the Washington hearings.

Two Injured When
Vehicles Collide
William Green Ardry, 54, of
332 Crater Lake ave., and
Freeda Ruth Wright, 1764
Springbrook rd., were injured
when their vehicles collided
Wednesday afternoon at Buck
shot rd. and Crater Lake ave.,
Medford police reported. .
Mrs. Wright was cited for
failure to yield the right of
way, police said. According to
reports, she told the investi
gating - patrolman that her
brakes failed as she approach
ed the intersection.
Police said Ardry complain
ed of pain in his left shoulder,
and Mrs. Wright suffered a
cut on her head.

operators of the Oaks Park
amusement center has sued
Portland Traction Company
for $1,175,000 over abandon
ment of interurban passenger
service.
The complaint was filed in
Circuit Court here.
It said that as a result of
the abandonment of passenger
service the Oaks Park lost
"thousands of customers."
The firm cut passenger
service on its interurban line
last year, saying it was losing
money. .
The complaint, in five sec
tions, demanded $975,000 for
the United Amusement Com
pany, owner of the Oaks, and
another $200,000 for Robert
E. Bollinger, president of the
company and owner of the
land over alleged depreciation
of the property.
Much of the sum demanded
consists of treble damages
sought under the railroad sec
tion of Oregon law.
The Oaks Park center is lo
cated in southeast Portland.
