Julius J.-My wife and I are with his grandparents without

in our mid-3 0s and have been
married 10 years. Enid was
a widow with a 2-year-old
son when I married her.
We now have three chil
dren of my own and I adopted
the little boy, Lenny, whom
I love like my own. I would
do anything in the world for
him, but in spite of this he
has been a source of trouble
in our marriage. I want him
to look on me as his own fa
ther and Enid thinks he ought
to know and remember his
real father.
I feel that Lenny is much
too young for so much con
fusion. Already he talks back
to me saying, "You can't tell
me. You aren't my real fa
ther." I feel like falling
through the floor when he
talks like that. Enid encour
ages it by pressing a close
attachment between him and
his father's parents.
Enid J.-When my husband
died I promised his parents
that whatever I did about my
future I 'would keep their
son's memory alive in Lenny.
Lenny's father was their only
son and it means everything
to them to have him know
all about his father. They ob
jected to my husband's legal
ly adopting Lenny, but for
many reasons I thought it
would be best.
I have tried, to make it up
to them by letting them be
as close to the boy as if his
father were alive. It seems
only fair. They love him so
much. He's all they have left
of their son.
Julius doesn't seem to un
derstand that Lenny really
loves him like a father. It's
only when he gets angry that
he talks like that. He doesn't
mean it and is always sorry
afterwards. Every night when
he says his prayers he re
members both his fathers.
The Council: Julius should
be aware that when they feel
hurt or angry many children
fantasy that their parents are
step-parents. Some like to im
agine they were stolen by the
gypsies and sold to their pres
ent parents, or that they were
adopted.
' If they have something real
to go on as Lenny has, this
fantasy is encouraged. But as
long as the relationship with
their everyday parents is rea
sonably happy, they get over
it quickly.
It would not be right to
withhold the information
about his real father from
Lenny. It is a fact that he
must live with and Julius
must live with. Julius must
try to avoid taking the boy's
back talk too seriously. His
own children will probably
give him some back talk at
one time or another and he
can't let it get under his skin.
It's an almost inevitable part
of rearing any youngster.
Julius should try to take Len
ny's variety of back talk as
he would that of his own chil
dren. He should try not to be
hurt or intimidated by it.
On the other hand, we
think it quite possible that
there has been a bit too much
emphasis on Lenny's real fa
ther in this family. He can
and should enjoy the warmth
and love of his relationship
constant talk of his dead fa
ther. The grandparents
shouldn't push their remin
iscences on him too heavily.
He will ask questions in his
own good time.
Enid should try to find a
way of putting this gently to
the grandparents. She might
suggest that Lenny could be
a happier youngster if he
didn't dwell overmuch on his
dead father-and that his fa
ther would probably prefer it
this way.
