Baltimore Oriole
Has Complicated Nest
It just so happened that the
colors of the coat-of-arms of
an Irish peer who came to the
new world to start a colony
in Maryland were orange and
black. The peer was Lord
Baltimore and when he and
his followers were established
they were surprised to dis
cover a colorful bird with a
black, shiny upper part and
wings, and a brilliant orange
colored breast.
The bird had a pleasant
voice and constructed an un
usual, hammock-like nest that
always hung from the very
tip-end of a tree limb.
The bird was an oriole and
inasmuch as its colors match
ed their leader's coat-of-arms,
it was only natural that they
should name the bird the Bal
timore Oriole. The name was
well chosen and it has stuck,
in spite of other common
names that various groups
have tried to attach to it,
such as Golden Robin, Hang
bird or Hammock-bird. The
oriole thereby retains some
little connection with early
American history.

grass, with a widely flaring
bottom. It hangs like a sack
from the tip end of a tree
usually an elm. The nesting
oriole, as well the the oriole
babies when they are at last
born, swing and sway, rock,'
rattle and roll with every
wind that blows.
Because the nest is usually
at the extreme end of a fie
ible and flimsy limb, the area
of the sway is increased many
fold. The over-all movement
becomes really great. In a
strong wind, when the tree
branches are dipping and
swaying, the nest must at
times swing in an arch as
much as 15 feet. At times
the nest must travel in an
almost complete circle, like
a ball on the end of a string.
What Do They Think?
It would be interesting to
know what the baby birds
think is happening the first
time the wind blows after
they are born. It must be a
rare sensation, sometimes last
ing throughout the entire
night and day. But in spite of
the high winds, the driving
rains and the burning sun
many oriole nests have been
known to last for four or five
years.
The oriole feeds almost ex
clusively on tent caterpillars,
especially during the time she
is feeding her young. After
the young leave the nest they
can only enjoy the remainder
of the summer for a few
weeks before they and their
parents must leave on the
long migration to Mexico and
South America. Come spring,
they return to the same or
nearby elm tree where they
were born to construct for
themselves the hanging nest
so typical of the Baltimore
Oriole.

and was spitting blood.
If convicted of kidnaping,
Mrs. Ortiz can receive a sen
tence of 20 years to life in
prison.
The 29-day-old baby's par
ents, Jose and Doralisa Ta-;
varez, said they hoped Mrs
Ortiz would receive "a lot of
assistance."
"But I can ' never forgive
her for this deed she did," the
31-year-old, Dominican - born
mother said.
