Army Life Not To Briton's Liking
Southampton, England-CPB-British
rock and roll singer,
Terry Dene will stay in the
army for a while despite the
"emotional strain," army of
ficials said today.
Dene, 19, who says he pat
terns his singing style and
gyrations after those of Elvis
Presley, has found the British
army tougher sledding than
GI Elvis has the American.
He was inducted last week
with Presley-style press and
television coverage, but two
days later was in bed in a
psychiatric ward because of
the emotional strain.
However, the army said,

An old man writes to say
that suddenly one way he
lost his sense of taste and
almost all
desire for
food. The in
side of his
mouth and
the tip of
his tongue
felt sore and
queer as if
they didn't
belong to
Dr Aivarea him. He says
he has been to any number
of doctors who filled him
with vitamins; they painted
his tongue with various
things, and he isn't the least
bit better. He wants to know
why.
All I can say is that in my
experience such sudden
changes from comfort to great
discomfort in older people
are usually due to a little
stroke. That is 'why I never
spend time tinkering at the
mouth or the tongue; the
trouble is not there; it is up
in the brain where, probably,
a tiny artery plugged up with
a blood clot. During my medi
cal lifetime I have seen hun
dreds of older people with
such discomforts, and their
only hope was that the trou
ble would wear off with time.
I remember an able, intelli
gent physician who became
very wealthy when oil was
found on his California ranch.
When he got one of these
distressing discomforts in his
mouth and face, he traveled
all over the civilized world
searching for someone who
would cure him. I studied his
problem on two occasions.
Later, on one of his journeys
he dropped in to say that at
last he had become fully satis
fied that my idea of a little
stroke was correct. He said
that experts had completely
anesthetized . his face by in
jecting the nerves with pro
caine, and still he felt the
distress. This convinced him
that the uncomfortable feel-J
mg was being produced up in
his brain.
Psittacosis, or Parrot Fever
People who have had a
spell of parrot fever, caught
from a pet parakeet, ask me
about the disease. Doubtless,
in most cases, the person with
parrot fever or a parrot pneu
monia is thought to have had
only a bad influenza. Psitta
cosis can produce anything
from a slight cold to a severe
and fatal pneumonia. The
only sure way of making the
diagnosis is to check the blood
with what is called a comple
ment fixation test. Sometimes
the patient, after a chill, gets
pains in his muscles, short
ness of breath, cough, nose
bleeds, spitting of blood, pain
in the chest or abdomen, nau
s e a, vomiting o r delirium.
X-ray examination may show
a broncho-pneumonia. Fortu
nately, today, the patient, can
be helped with one of the
more powerful "tetra-cycline"
antibiotics.
Recently, I asked my old
friend, Dr. Karl ' F. Meyer,
formerly Director of the
Hooper Foundation of the Uni
versity of California and a
world expert on psittacosis,
to tell me about the present
status of this problem. He
said that the disease, which

came to us first in parrots and
parakeets, is now hard to get
rid of because it has spread
to turkeys and pigeons.
Dr. Meyer tells me that in
the last five years in the
U. S. there were 1687 cases
of parrot fever reported; and
in one out of four of these
cases the victim had worked
with poultry or in a plant
where turkeys were process
ed. Other persons involved
were workers in pet shops, or
owners of flocks of pigeons.
Others just had one pet para
keet. Fortunately, in many cases,
the virus in the birds is so
little virulent that it infects
but few people, and then does
not always make a severe
illness. But we cannot count
on this. In one big turkey
farm studied, none of the em
ployees got the disease, while
in another similar place,
where turkeys were prepared
for market, 85 of the em
ployees caught it, and seven
died.
Obviously, the number re
ported cases is not large, but
among them the mortality has
been high enough to show
that the disease is one that
must keep public health offi
cers uneasy. Fortunately, now
Dr. Meyer has found that the
infected birds can be treated
with a strong antibiotic,
which, when added to their
food, will eradicate the in
fection. 4-H Club News
Westside Hayburners
The Westside Hayburners
4-H horse club held its month
ly meeting Jan. 10 at Penny
Samperts home.
Linda Gibson reported on
the ride held Dec. 30.
The vice president was
changed again because Sharon
Forde was elected vice presi
dent at the last meeting and
she felt she should not hold
the office because she is also
junior leader of .the club. Bon
nie Cheney now holds the
office of vice president.
Pam Roberts was elected
sergeant at arms and it was
decided that any one out of
order during a meeting would
be fined 5 cents and the ser
geant at arms will be fined
double.
The club voted Jan Main
into the club as mascot.
The club decided to hold
a snow party as soon as there
is enough snow at Dollarhide
or at Union creek. They also
decided that most of the mem
bers will give a demonstration
at meetings during the year
and at the end of the year
the two best ones will be pick
ed to go to the county fair.
Each member will also give
a special report during the
year. Penny Sampert gave a
special report on the colors
and markings of horses.
The club plans to have some
field trips during the spring
and summer months to prac
tice judging horses.
The club will also invite
another club and the county
agent to one of their meetings
during the year.
The next meeting will be
held at Pam Roberts home
Feb. 14 at 10 ajn.
The meeting was ajourned
and Mrs. Sampert served re

a million scientists and engi
neers are working in indus
try, according to the National
Science Foundation.
However, only one-third of
these 738,000 persons were
engaged in research and de
velopment activities as of Jan
uary. 1957.
From 1954 to 1957, employ
ment of scientists and engi
neers increased by about 30
per cent with employment of
those in the life sciences and
in physics increasing the most
-by about 60 per cent. At the
same time, there was an in
crease of 80 per cent in re
search and development costs.
Engineers made up the larg
est occupational group: 528,
000. Among the scientists, the
chemists were most numerous,
72,000. Other scientists .are
ranked according to number
as follows: life scientists, 16,
600; earth scientists, 14,200;
mathematicians, 12.400; physi
cists, 12,100; and metallur
gists, 10,800.
